Section. 1 Summer Semester 2020
Subject: Irrigation and Drainage Engineering.

Course Instructor. Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Hoque (Rqq)

Mid Term-2(Based on Online Class)

Total marks- 100(20), Answer any Ten questions out of Twelve. The questions are of equal
value. The answer for each question within 150 to 200 words will be preferred.

Cautions: The answers should be based on your clear understanding and learning about the matter. If it appears to
be copied from others, then the marks will be deducted. Student evaluation will also be made based on their class
performance and attendance.

1) Describe with neat flow diagram the different methods of lift irrigation by man or animal power and
mechanical or electrical power. (10)
2) Explain the term:
a) Porosity, b) Coefficient of Permeability, c) Water Table, d) Ground Water Yield and Velocity, e)
Unconfined ,Confined and Perched Aquifers, f) Hydraulic Conductivity, g) Specific Yield, h)
Specific Capacity, i) Cone of Depression and j) draw Down. (10)

3) Derive the Expressions for the Yield (Q) of an Unconfined and Confined Aquifers. (10)

4) A tube well of 15 cm diameter fully penetrate an unconfined aquifer.

During the pumping test the following data was obtained:
a) Height of static water level from bottom of the aquifer= 35m
b) Height of draw down from bottom of aquifer= 25m
c) Radius of the circle of influence = 250m
d) Coefficient of permeability =40m/day
Calculate the discharge (Q) of the well (10)
5) A tube well penetrates fully in a confined aquifer. Determine the diameter of the tube well from the
following data:
a) Required well yield = 80 lits/sec
b) Radius of circle of influence = 150m
c) Thickness of confined aquifer = 25m
d) Draw down =5m
e) Coefficient of permeability =50m/day.

6) Describe in brief, the development and maintenance of tube wells and the causes of their failure, how
the failure can be prevented? Describe a centrifugal and reciprocating pump with neat sketch.

7) Discuss in brief the types of canals based on purpose, nature of supply, discharge and alignment. (10)
8) What are the points which should be considered while selecting the sites for Barrage and Dam? (10)

9) What are the points to be kept in mind in selecting the proper sites for Alignment Perennial and
Inundation Canals? (10)

10) Discuss the Measures to be taken for the Maintenance of Inundation Canals? (10)
