Oil Spill and its Adverse Effects on Marine Life

INTRODUCTION

It is the problem which mainly occurs during the transportation of oil. An oil spills is the
release of a liquid hydrocarbon including petroleum products into the environment,
especially marine areas, due to human activity, and is a form of pollution. Oil spills may
be due to releases of crude oil from tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs & wells, etc.
and this may be due to accidents. Heavier fuels used by large ships such as bunker
fuel, or the spill of any oily refuse or waste oil.

CAUSES OF OIL SPILLS:

Oil spill pollution can be as a result of both of natural as well as manmade causes.
Accidental spills- Storage - It can be from accidents related to bursting of critical
components. Oil products may be stored in a variety of ways including underground and
aboveground storage tanks such containers may develop leaks over time. Handling -
during transfer operations and various uses. Offshore drilling and Routine maintenance
activities such as cleaning of ships may release oil into navigable waters. Water Sports
-oil spills are spills by petroleum users of released oil. This happens when various water
sports or water vehicles such as motorboats and jet skis leak fuel. Intentional oil
discharges are some of the critical contributors to oil spills.
PREVENTION

Reduce the generation of oily waste and should prevent the process of storing waste oil
and oily waste. Have frequent monitoring of oil and oily waste. Transfer or transportation
of waste oil and oily waste to shore facilities should be given more importance and
should be cautious about oily waste. Reduce the generation of oily waste. Store waste
oil and oily waste. Processing of oily waste and its storing should be monitored. The
training officer must ensure that formal training is provided to key personnel who
maintain and operate pollution control equipment. The training officer is responsible for
training that achieves expertise. As a supervisor, you should be sure that all engineering
personnel are familiar with the sources of oil spills and oil waste that may cause
pollution.

IMPACTS

Inhalation of vapor coming out and also touching oil slicks and if by any chance coming
in contact with contaminated materials that are toxic can lead to many health issues.
Next issue is consuming of contaminated sea food can Cause many neurological
problems, acute toxic effects, ocular (eye) and also problems of respiratory system
Nausea, throat infections, nose and eye irritations, etc. along with migraines and
headaches.

CONCLUSION

Oil spills can have disastrous consequences for society; economically, environmentally,
and socially it can also have an impact on our lives. As a result, oil spill accidents have
initiated intense media attention and political uproar, bringing many together in a
political struggle concerning government response to oil spills and what actions can
best prevent them from happening.
Water Pollution in Bangladesh

Description/ Introduction:

In Bangladesh, there are significant number of textile factories supporting the country's
development, financially. Due to the large number of textile factories effluent
management is a very significant environmental aspect to protect the environment,
which is very diverse naturally, in terms of flora and fauna. Untreated effluent being
discharged to the local rivers and land is causing significant impacts due to pollution.

Causes of the problem:

To reduce the installation, running cost and further maintenance of an effluent treatment
plant, the factories are directly discharging the wastewater into the local water bodies
including rivers, ponds and to the land.

Impacts of the problem:

The direct discharge of untreated wastewater into the rivers and ponds will pollute the
water and alter the physical and chemical characteristics of the water causing animals
and fishes to perish. Whereas in the land, the soil characteristics are being altered
causing flora and wildlife to perish. This also impacts the groundwater quality
significantly, which is one of the key sources for drinking for human population in the
country.

Solutions and conclusion:

The solution to this critical issue is to implement strict strategies and laws by the
government to install and maintain effluent treatment plants. The effluent treatment
plant will treat the wastewater generated from the garment factories mixed with several
toxic chemicals including heavy metals to release the treated non-toxic water to the
environment in accordance with the local and international standards. This will conserve
the nature and continue to raise the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country for a
better tomorrow.
