THE IMPACT OF COVID ON THE COLOMBIAN ECONOMY

INTRODUCTION.

This essay seeks to provide evidence of the impact that covid-19 has had on the country's
economic environment, specifically due to the suspension or closure of economic activities in
both the formal and informal sectors from the moment isolation was declared or Mandatory
quarantine and also in terms of the modifications that entrepreneurs had to make in order not
to fail in their work, that is, in terms of innovation and creation of new business ideas.

Coronavirus (coV) is spoken of as those viruses that appear periodically in different parts of
the world, causing acute infectious problems in the respiratory system, in short it is
considered a flu that can occur in a mild, moderate or severe way.
Covid-19 appeared in our country on March 6, as an infection that is transmitted when the
person presents coughs and sneezes, as it expels particles of the same that remain in the
environment and come into contact with others exposed to said environment .
The arrival of this virus to our country, forced us to isolate ourselves in a preventive and
mandatory way at the national level, causing both the internal and external economies of the
country to be involved and affected, since economic activities had to suspend or close what
took to increase the unemployment rate. On the other hand, the numbers of infected continue
to increase, which creates a conflict for the community, on the one hand there is health care
and on the other hand the family economy of Colombians. Despite the fact that certain
strategies have been established in order to soften the aspects affected by the virus, it is clear
that Colombia is a country incapable of coping with isolation or closure if its economy is in
crisis, for which the latter The strategy was to reopen certain sectors.
On March 25, the National Government declared mandatory isolation due to the rapid
increase in positive cases, isolation that meant the closure of the country due to the
emergency.
We Colombians knew that this measure would be the cause of a number of economic
problems as a result of the restriction of activities in most labor sectors, although some of
these could continue their activities through the internet, many not They had contemplated
the implementation of platforms, so many did not have this tool and were forced to close,
including manufacturing companies, construction companies or companies producing goods.
Only medical personnel, supply companies, drugstores, electrical and household workers,
banks, notaries, the media, surveillance and cleaning could work with permission from the
national government, however this population does not represent even a quarter of the
economy. which would generate dissatisfaction for those who had to cease their work.
We must take into account that a large percentage of workers in our country are informal,
which refers to market activities that are based on household resources without necessarily
being a legal company, DANE in its latest report which is carried out in 13 cities of the
country, obtained figures of 13.9% and 48.4% men and women respectively belonging to
informal work, for which a decision was reached that benefits or protects small and medium-
sized companies and guarantees a minimum income to the citizens who live from day to day.
The covid has brought with it a noticeable decrease in the supply and demand of both
products and services, generating an affection in individuals, companies from different
sectors, since the closure of the country, the free movement of goods is involved and affected
and services, except products related to the family basket which help with tariffs, generating
relief in crisis mitigation strategies.
Likewise, the tourism sector is also affected because the restrictions in terms of circulation by
air, land and sea, which are an important income of the country, the departments are being
affected by the lack of national and international tourists, which which would imply losing
2% of GDP.

CONCLUSIONS:
The situation in which many countries find themselves, including Colombia, is something
that arises unexpectedly and generates a social, economic, political and health crisis, causing
political structures to re-evaluate the way in which they are taking the reins of the country.
Our country does not have the capacity to maintain a preventive quarantine for a longer
period, despite the aid that the government can offer for the population that is vulnerable, it is
necessary that all those who can go out to work do so since the economic reactivation
depends on this.
The sectors involved must innovate their strategies and business ideas and sales methods to
survive and generate new opportunities that help open the economy.
