Education is Life

In this time of pandemic, the education system has been greatly challenged as to
how to carry out and continue education amidst the threat of the Corona virus. Hence,
people in the education sector were forced to create a new normal way and teachers,
parents and students as well were forced to adapt, adopt and be adept with it. Various
learning modalities that have been practiced by few in the past years and were unusual
were now known and used by many. Distance education which seem unfamiliar is
actually going on for years already but it is only now that it has been given attention.
Learning resources are not new such as books, teachers’ guide, learners’ manual and
other printed materials have been used for decades but online and electronic resources
are being crafted and utilized such as the LRMDS Portal and DepEd Commons. These
are used to aide instruction in distance education to still ensure quality learning, but
what about assessment? How can we ensure quality assessment? There are alternative
and authentic assessments used by many teachers already but in this time, we can
question its quality. Teachers then should have a revalida via interview to ask the
students regarding the topics.
With everything that has been going on – the number of Corona Virus patients is
still rising, teachers on the field busy printing modules and preparing for the opening of
classes, parents still not knowing what to do and how to assist their children, some
students still don’t care about their education, and many other concerns, I have realized
that whatever will happen, formal education must continue. The opening of classes this
school year is still a heated debate but only those in the education sector clearly see the
threat if education would stop. So, even though there are a lot of things to lear and
unlearn, to do and craft, to finance and spend on, the education system is willing to go
through everything just to make sure that education will continue. Teachers who are the
implementing body are even risking their lives to deliver education. We are the silent
front liners. Even before the pandemic, we teachers are already frontliners. We are at
the center of the battlefield all the tim – risking and giving it all – our time, effort, money-
just to prepare the future of our country and the hope of our land. We are already tested
for many years... are we going to stop now?
As an educator, I need to have a lot of preparations to make and that includes
the knowledge and skills. I have learned a lot in the learning sessions that I will bring
and use in the field. The strategies and techniques will be my weapon to ensure quality
education even in this most trying times of the education system. This is the best tine
that we teachers must stand, work hand and hand, use whatever resources we have
and reach out to others – to the stakeholders, to the community and even to the private
sectors who are willing to help just so education will continue. As what Proverbs 4:13
said, “Take hold of instruction, do not let go. Guard her, for she is your life.” Education
is life.
