Cuk Convereter Project

Group Members:

Instructor:
1. OBJECTIVE:

“To design a Cuk converter.”

2. INTRODUCTION:

The Cuk converter is an electronic converter capable of both step up and step downing DC
voltage similar to a buck-boost circuit which operates similarly to it. Except it also uses a
capacitor to couple both the boost and buck topologies in the circuit. The capacitor also has a
major role of energy storage unlike the exclusive inductor use in Buck-Boost Converter.
Below 50% duty cycle it steps down the output and above 50% it steps up the output.

3. CIRCUIT SCHEMATIC:

4. SIMULATION:

DUTY CYCLE = 75%

Output is -37.231V

5. CALCULATIONS:
K
Vo=−Vs
1−K
At 75% duty cycle:

0.75
Vo=−12 =−36 V
1−0.75
At 30% duty cycle:

0.30
Vo=−12 =−5.14 V
1−0.30
At 10% duty cycle:

0.1
Vo=−12 =−1.33V
1−0.10

6. OBSERVATIONS:

The Cuk Converter was simulated on Multisim. During the practical construction it was found
that the converter was stepping the DC voltage correctly but it had issues and couldn’t properly
step up the DC voltage beyond base input voltage.
7. Applications:

It is widely used in electrical power system, communication, instruments and meters etc. The
advantage of the basic non isolated Cuk Converter over the standard Buck–Boost Converter is
to provide regulated DC output voltage at higher efficiency and this also reduce ripple currents
and reduced switching losses.

1. Cuk converter is used as voltage regulator in hybrid solar-wind energy system where

input voltage depends on speed of wind and sun.
2. Cuk converter together with battery technologies is used on the low voltage DC supply
for Electric Vehicles
