Universal Design for Learning (UDL): I believe this lesson hits the marks for the UDL in multiple ways. Making
this a group activity fosters collaboration and community, while allowing the students to create their own
work allows for individual choice and customizing the display of information. For differentiation, along with
PowerPoint and Prezi, I would allow my students if they asked to use other programs such as Book Creator,
Piktochart, Canva, etc., if it suits them better.
Lesson idea implementation: At the start of the lesson, the instructor gives a 5-10-minute overview of the
Great Depression and its effects on Georgia, especially Rural Georgia. Along with this, the instructor goes on
to describe the FDR’s New Deal programs, what their goals were, and whether they were effective or not.

After this introduction, the instructor splits the class into various groups and assigns each group one of the
following New Deal programs: The Civilian Conservation Corps, the Agricultural Adjustment Act, the Rural
Electrification Administration or the Social Security Administration. The students will read the New Georgia
Encyclopedia article on the program, then create a PowerPoint or Prezi Presentation with the following
information: What is the program about? When was the program created? Why was it created? How did it
affect Georgians? Did Eugene Talmadge Oppose or Agree with the program? Was it successful?

The students are encouraged to add graphics to the presentation to help visualize their program. After
creating their presentations, the students will then present them to the class. When all the presentations are
finished, the instructor discusses with the students some similarities and differences between the programs,
including the fact that Eugene Talmadge, the governor of Georgia at the time, opposed most of them. The
instructor asks the class why they think he did, before wrapping up the assignment.

Reflective Practice: I think this lesson is a good way of getting the students to create their own content for

learning about the New Deal and its Programs. The standard I chose was not an introductory one, rather it is
the end of a particular section of the Great Depression/New Deal era of Georgia. If I were to use this lesson
plan to teach students about the New Deal, I would review this lesson before segueing into WWII with the
next lesson.
