ST. ALEXIUS PRAYER
Precious Lord, St. Alexius ran away

from home disguised as a beggar in
order to pursue his vocation. Later, he
returned as a beggar keeping his true
identity hidden.
ST. ALEXIUS PRAYER
But his parents who were kind to the

needy, invited him in.
For seventeen years, they let him live in a

corner under their stairs, seeing him only
as a homeless man. There, he prayed and
taught the faith to children.
ST. ALEXIUS PRAYER
I ask him to intercede for the homeless.

Lead them to the ministries and
organizations that will supply their needs
and draw out the gifts that they can offer.

O Jesus, fill my heart with Your kindness

toward them. Saint Alexius, pray for us.

St. Alexius College is a duly recognized and accredited

institution founded by Dr. Arturo P. Pingoy and Dr. Amparo
Y. Pingoy in 1971, to provide education and training for
regional and socio-economic development.

What is Humanities?
• The word Humanities comes from the Latin humanus, which
means human, cultured, refined.
• They are the branches of learning based on the philosophy and
ethical perspective of humanism. This is emphasize the value
and agency of human beings, individual thoughts over
established doctrine or faith.
At present, here is a list of subjects often covered in
humanities courses.

• Painting, sculpture, architecture,
and photography are collectively
called as the visual arts. Visual
arts or spatial arts are those art
forms that we perceive with our
eyes, and which occupy space.
• Music and Literature are referred
to as auditory arts. Auditory arts or
temporal arts are those art forms that
can be heard and are expressed in
time.
• Theater, dance, and film are
classified as the combined arts.
Combined arts, also known as the
performing arts since it involves
performance, are those that can be
both seen and heard, and these art
forms unfold in both space and time.

“human”
• We can, by studying what other men and women have
believed, created, and understood, also become better human
beings.
• We can learn more about ourselves, about other people and
about the world around us.

Text
• The text of any primary source refers to its medium (that is,
what it is made of), its form (its outward shape), and its
context (the subject it describes).
• Whether intended to be spoken or lead, literature depends on
the medium of words.
• The visual arts – paintings, sculpture, architecture, and
photography.
Context
• We use after word context to describe the historical and
cultural background or environment of the artwork.
• Understanding the relationship between text and context is
one of the principal concerns of any inquiry into the
humanistic disciplines.
Subtext
• The subtext of the literary or artistic objects refers to its
secondary and implied meanings.
• The subtext embraces the emotional or intellectual messages
embedded in, or implied by, a work of art.
Beyond the Humanistic

Theater
• Comment on the performance or delivery of the play. Discuss
the following questions:
• Don’t retell the plot of the narrative or critique the
performance of the actors (expect where this seems to
have interfered with an appreciation of the production).
An Art Gallery or Museum
• Select two works that you can compare and contrast. Discuss
the following questions:
• Describe each object as carefully as possible, using all
the skills of description we have discussed.
Dance
• Comment on the performance or delivery of the dance,
discuss the following questions:
• What is the general style of the performance?
•Formal Ballet: narrative, graceful, symmetrical
movements leaps and en pointe toe work.
Lecture
• Write about the content of the lecture. Discuss the following
questions:
• What was the lecturer’s main point?

•Briefly summarize the lecturer’s argument.

• the idealist, art is an imitation of an imitation.
Aristotle
• the realist, art is still an imitation, but imitation not of the ideal
world like Plato but the real (physical) world.
Romantics
• art is primarily the expressions of feelings or intentions of the
artist.
Tolstoy
• art is the contagious of feeling. This means that the artist
expresses feeling through the artwork which turn evokes that
feelings in the viewers (audience). Art is interpreted or judged
by the quality of feelings it expresses and “infects” with us.
Croce
• art is the expression of emotion. Emotions are very real and a
primal type of knowledge.
