make ‘small talk’ with your partner. Your teacher will tell you when
to move onto the next situation.

conversation with the person next to you.
b) You’re on a long train journey. The person opposite you will
start speaking to you. Respond appropriately.
c) You have invited a business partner from another country
to a typical restaurant in your town. Make conversation that
doesn’t involve your main business.

problem you are having with your flatmate. Your partner will give
you advice. Then listen to your partner’s problem and give him/her
advice to help solve the problem.

You live in a flat that you share with two other students. Your
flatmate, Adam, is very messy and is not very considerate to
other people. You have made a cleaning rota, but he never
does any washing up or cleaning. Adam also often takes other
people’s food from the kitchen. Sometimes, he listens to loud
rock music late at night and invites friends into the flat to party.
You would like to ask him to leave, but he is a relative of the
landlord. You cannot move away because you have signed a
contract for a whole year. Your other flatmate, Tony, is a little
frightened of Adam and does not support you when you try to
speak to him.

You have been invited to your aunt’s 80th birthday. She is your
mother’s only remaining sister and has been very ill recently.
Unfortunately, the party is taking place on the weekend that
your boyfriend/girlfriend wants to go to New York with you,
to celebrate your 10 year anniversary in a luxury hotel. You
have had some problems in your relationship recently, so this
trip is important. It is also the only weekend that both you and
your boyfriend/girlfriend are able to go away because of work
commitments. However, your mother and aunt would be upset if
you did not attend the birthday party.
