EXPLORATORY

1
Overview/Subject
Description
Clothes and textile are used everywhere in
the globe for it is considered as one of the
five basic necessities for a human to survive.
The fast changing trend and the bulky
demands made it a huge industry, calling for
massive production and a large number of
manpower, from huge and renowned fashion
boutiques, clothing lines, and factories to
small tailoring shops, which makes
dressmaking a life skill that should be
be taught to the 21st century learners in order to equip and prepare them to
become competent and be an excellent asset of the global workforce.

However, everything has its own price. In order to attain such skill and
competence, one needs to acquire the virtue of tenacity, discover the
appropriate and accurate knowledge and go through a rigid practice.

Thus, to deliver the said knowledge and skill to the 21st century learners and
eradicate the gap brought forth by the present pandemic (COVID 19) to the
teaching and learning process are the utmost purpose of this Learning Guide.
This will further enhance the precision and accuracy skills of the students
and develop an eye for creative designs that will be useful in designing and
constructing their own clothes or apparel.

Learning is not bounded by the four corners of a classroom nor to the daily
interaction of the teacher and the students, in contrast, learning is made
limitless with determination and an active involvement in new discoveries.

Welcome Note for the Learners....

Dearest Learners,

Praise be Jesus through Mary!

I am blessed to congratulate you for doing a great job in your

previous year and welcome you to another awesome year of
learning new information and fulfilling another set of tasks in
Technology and Livelihood Education.
This year, let us again work hand-in-hand to achieve effective
teaching and learning process through the proper utilization of
available educational mediums like this module. In this learning
material, we tried our best to write it in a simple yet comprehensive
way with self-paced activities specially crafted for your
convenience.
We ensure that after this quarter you will be able to design and
construct your own simple garment using basic stitches and
following the necessary procedures indicated in this module as well.
You are about to step into another platform and one step closer to
your goal and aspiration. Keep going and continue doing your best.
Happy Learning!

INTRODUCTION

In your previous grade level, you have been acquainted

with the basic sewing tools and equipment in dressmaking.
This time we will refresh all the information that you got last year and dig
deeper to fully understand the role that each tool play in this field. We will
explore not just the uses of tools and the anatomy of sewing equipment in
dressmaking but also the different principles of designs and color harmonies then
bring to life what we learn through designing and constructing simple but useful
garments.

4
Just like any other blades our skills and knowledge needs to be sharpened in
order to prevent rust and maintain our brains prime and have deeper retention in
order to apply it to either planned or any unexpected real life situations. Thus,
for this quarter you will have a full illustration of the essential tools and
equipment and utilize it through the proper execution of the performance check
prepared for each week.

Before we start our lesson, let’s respond to each question first!

INSTRUCTION:Express your personal opinion/insight about the statements freely if

you agree just write YES if not then write NO along with a brief explanation why you
come up to that opinion.

1. There is only one system of measurement. (YES/NO)

2. A tailor does not need to measure the length and width of the
materials such as fabric, laces, etc,. (YES/NO)

Simple calculations involves the four fundamental operations which is the

Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction (MDAS). It is essential in
dressmaking to determine the accurate size of body parts, length and width of the
materials and its cost.
Metric Measuring System is needed in measuring the length and width of the

6
materials needed in the construction of an apparel.

Example:

How many inches are there in a 100 centimeters

width of fabric?

Given:

fabric width = 100 centimeters

Inches = ?
* 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters
Solve:
Width of fabric = 100 cm = 39.37
inches
2.54 cm 2.54 cm

Example:

How many centimeters are there in a 60 inches

length of fabric?

Given:

fabric width = 60 inches

centimeters = ?
* 2.54 centimeters = 1 inch
Solve:
= Width of fabric X 2.54 cm
= 60 inches X 2.54 cm
= 152.4 cm

Now that you already know the difference of the Metric and English
Systems, lets proceed to the Activity 1 (Venn Diagram). This activity
will help you analyze further the difference and the similarities of the
two systems in dressmaking.

How to Take Body Measurements

1. Get a partner to take or to whom you will take the measurements.
2. Wear comfortable clothes when measured.
3. Tie string around your waistline.
4. Use flexible tape measure and pull it snugly but not too tight.
5. Observe good posture while your partner or you are being measured.

8
6. Measure the crotch by using an L-square or a flat char and a tape measure.
7. Record all measurements on the chart.

SYNTHESIS
The accurate calculation of body measurements is one of the basic necessity in
producing a well fitted apparel for both ladies and men. One simple mistake in
measurement could ruin the entire garment, thus, handling and doing it with extreme
carefulness and passion is indeed important.
You might not make it quite as accurate as any seamstress/tailor could be at first
attempt but you could go on and learn from every mistake and scratch to become a better
person and create a better version than yesterday.
The Metric System includes basic calculations, though basic there are times wherein
one would be in the state of confusion and doubt. Just like in life, there are times when
we lack focus on the thing/s that we do that causes self doubt, however, even if life throw
upon us a heap of distractions let us not stop solving it. Little by little there would be
progress, and that little progress if constantly practiced would be vast at the right time.
Patience and determination will always be our greatest ally to solve whatever
problem or struggles that we have. Keep on pushing at the end of the day, it will all be
problems that molds us to be a better version of ourselves.
