Writers use sentences of different lengths to create sentence variety in their


prose. Sentence length can help add texture to a selection and help the writer
make a point. A good writer uses a variety of sentences to engage the reader and
convey ideas clearly.
Long sentences provide rhythm, substance, complexity, and detail.
Short sentences provide succinctness (getting to the point), drama, and impact.

A. DIRECTIONS: The sentences below are in order from paragraph 5 of “The Thrill of
the Chase.” Read each sentence and then choose the word from the list that best
describes the effect the sentence, and its length, have on you as the reader.

The purpose is to have variety,by having different kinds of lengths used in
the paragraphs it makes it more diverse, and more appealing to readers.
