SEMESTER END EXAMINATIONS – JANUARY 2018

Course & Branch : B.E. : Common to all branches Semester : VII
Subject : Air Pollution and Control Max. Marks : 100
Subject Code : CVOE01 Duration : 3 Hrs

Instructions to the Candidates:

 Answer one full question from each unit.
 Assume the necessary data suitably.

UNIT- I
1. a) Define Air Pollution? Name any three air pollutants with their possible CO1 (10)
sources by giving examples.
b) It is observed that average daily concentration of SO 2 in the CO1 (05)
3
atmospheric air at 28°C and 690 mm of Hg is 55 µg/m . Convert the
concentration in PPM.
c) Write short note on any one air pollution disaster. CO1 (05)

2. a) Distinguish between primary and secondary air pollutants giving CO1 (10)
examples.
b) The car exhaust contains 0.2% by volume of CO. Calculate the CO1 (05)
concentration of CO in µg/m3 (25ºC at 760 mm of Hg).
c) Discuss in brief the sources and effects of Carbonmonoxide on health. CO1 (05)

UNIT- II
3. a) Explain the effects of various air pollutants on plants. CO2 (10)
b) Define a plume. Illustrate with sketches the plume behaviour and CO2 (10)
explain meteorological conditions causing the dispersion of pollutants.

4. a) Enumerate with examples the effect of air pollutants on: CO2 (10)
(i) Building materials (ii) Electronic industry
(iii) Monumental structures (iv) Rubber.
b) (i) List the formulae used for calculating the height of stack based on CO2 (10)
particulate matter emission and SO2 emission.
(ii) Calculate the effective stack height given the following data from an
industry:
Physical stack height -130m
Diameter of stack – 0.8m
Wind velocity – 5 km/hr
Ambient temperature – 20oC
Barometric pressure – 1000 millibars
Stack gas velocity – 10m/sec , Stack gas temperature -140oC.

6. a) Explain the procedure by which particulate pollutants suspended in air CO3 (10)
are sampled and analyzed.
b) With a neat sketch explain the procedure of stack sampling. CO3 (10)

UNIT- IV
7. a) Sketch and explain the working of a bag house filter giving its CO4 (10)
applications in the industries.
b) Explain the suitability, advantages and disadvantages of cyclones. CO4 (10)

8. a) Discuss the functioning and operational problems of fabric filters and its CO4 (10)
remedial measures.
b) With a neat sketch explain the design and working of a settling CO4 (10)
chamber and mention its applications.

UNIT- V
9. Demonstrate the working of Electrostatic precipitator with a neat CO5 (20)
sketch. Also state its advantages and disadvantages.
