Classification  Therapeutic class: Antiprotozoals
 Pharmacologic class: Nitroimidazoles
Indications  Tx. Amebiasis
 Tx Of anti biotic associated pseudomembranous colitis
 Tx. Gardnerella vaginalis infection
 Tx. Trichomoniasis
 Tx. Bacterial Vaginitis
 Tx. Of anerobic bacterial infection
 Preop, intraop, postop px of pts undergoing colorectal surgery
 Tx. Of inflammatory papules, pustules, erythema of rosacea
Dosage  Injection: 500 mg/100 mL in ready-to-use (RTU) minibags
 Tablets: 250 mg; 500 mg
Action  Direct-acting trichomonacide and amebicide that works inside and
outside the intestines. It’s thought to enter the cells of
microorganisms that contain nitroreductase, forming unstable
compounds that bind to DNA and inhibit synthesis, causing cell
death.
Adverse Reactions  Anorexia, ataxia, darkened, urine, dizziness, dry mouth, H/A,
injection site reaction, n/v/d, superinfections, unpleasant metallic
taste

Patient education  Not for use in breastfeeding.

medication take orally with food , avoid alcohol or alcohol containing
preparations during and for 24-72 hrs After treatment
 use sugar list lozengesfor dry mouth /metallic taste
 Report severe GI problems and fever
