THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS

Junior reporter Liam Mellor visited the San Juan Islands with his parents. Read his blog post to find out about
his holiday.

‘The San Juan Islands are on the north-west coast of America – about 100 kilometres north of Seattle, USA.
You can fly to the islands, or you can get there by boat from Victoria, Canada. That’s what we did. With tall,
green forests, blue water, and pretty white houses, the islands are very beautiful. But are they a good place for a
holiday?

There are 172 islands in the area, but a lot of them are very small, and most tourists visit the four main islands:
San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Shaw Island, and Lopez Island. We stayed in a town called Friday Harbor, on San
Juan Island. When we arrived at our hotel, there was no TV or WiFi! “I’m going to be very bored here,” I
thought. But I was wrong!

There are lots of different things to do on the main islands. Shaw Island is very small, so you can walk around it
in a day and visit interesting places like an old monastery. Lopez Island is a great place to go cycling. On Orcas
Island, you can buy great food at the Eastsound Saturday market, and you can listen to some cool local bands.
San Juan Island is a great place to take tours. Most fishing tours and kayak trips leave from Friday Harbor.

Orca whales visit the San Juan Islands from May to October. Some of these magnificent animals are eight
metres long and weigh more than six tonnes – and they often jump out of the water. We saw them from a kayak!
They came very close to us but they weren’t dangerous.

My dad’s really interested in history, so he took us to the Pig War Festival at the National Historical Park on
San Juan Island. For a few days every July, actors at the park wear costumes from the 1850s and they re-enact
the story of the Pig War. In 1859, an American man shot an English pig because it ate one of his potatoes. That
started a 12-year conflict between Britain and America. But it was a bloodless 1 war. They didn’t use any guns
and no one died. The pig was the only victim!

Another great activity on San Juan Island is going on a zip line (a very long cable down a hill). You’re
connected to the cable at the top of a hill, and then you go down it, very fast! We went on a three-hour zip line
tour of the island, and it was fantastic. We flew over trees, lakes and rivers at about 50 kilometres an hour! It
was my favourite activity on the islands, but my parents hated it!

After seven days in Friday Harbor, we had to go home. I was very sad to leave the beautiful San Juan Islands. I
lived without the internet and TV for a week – but I had lots of fun, and I really want to visit the islands again in
the future.’

THE GLOBE THEATRE

At the end of the 16th century in London, Elizabeth I was Queen of England. There was no television, and there
were no cinemas, films, or DVDs. Computers and video games didn’t exist, either. What did people do in their
free time?

During the time of Elizabeth I, the most popular form of entertainment in England was the theatre.

Groups of actors called ‘companies’ travelled around the country and performed plays. People didn’t think
acting was a respectable profession for women, so the actors were always men. When a play had female
characters, young boys usually played these parts! Each theatre changed its plays regularly. Sometimes they had
performances of ten different plays in two weeks, so the public was never bored!

Everybody loved watching plays: old and young, rich and poor, men and women. Queen Elizabeth I also loved
the theatre, and she often invited companies to perform for her. She liked William Shakespeare, and she invited
his company more often than others. Shakespeare wasn’t only a writer. He also acted in many plays, including
some of his own plays: Hamlet, As You Like It, and Macbeth.

In 1599, Shakespeare and his company built the Globe theatre in south London, near the River Thames. The
Globe was a type of amphitheatre. It was shaped like a circle, and it was made of wood. It had a rectangular
stage where the actors performed. The stage had two columns, and there was a roof over it. There was space for
between 1,500 and 3,000 people in the Globe. Poor people stood up in front of the stage. This area was called
‘the pit’, and tickets cost just one penny. This part of the theatre didn’t have a roof. Richer people sat in three
levels of galleries around the pit. They paid an extra penny. Very rich people sat on comfortable chairs next to
the stage.

In 1613, the Globe burned down. A cannon1 which they were using for special effects accidentally set fire to the
roof. The theatre was completely destroyed. They rebuilt it in the same place a year later.

In 1642, a group called the Puritans closed all the theatres in London, including the Globe. People weren’t
allowed to perform plays any more. The Puritans were a political and religious movement. They hated all kinds
of theatre, music, and dancing. In 1644, they demolished the Globe.

More than 300 years later, in 1969, an American actor and director called Sam Wanamaker decided to rebuild
the Globe. He wanted the new Globe to be as similar as possible to the original. There were a lot of problems,
and it took a very long time. But finally, in 1997, the theatre reopened near its original location. Unfortunately,
Wanamaker died in 1993, so he never saw his dream come true. Today, thousands of people visit the rebuilt
theatre every year. They watch Shakespeare’s plays, and visit the museum and souvenir shop.
