1. What are the main functions of language?

Language is the way we can communicate with other people. It is a method to express our
ideas, emotions and the language is the most important thing when transmitting information
to a person or community.

2. Define the notions of a person’s linguistic competence and his/her linguistic performance.

Linguistic competence of person means that she or he must know the language to say any kind
of sentence in any language and the application is the process when she or he are performing
control while speaking.

3. What’s the aim of Theoretical Grammar?

The theoretical grammar aims description of the grammatical system of the language also
formation of the sentences and formation in the speaking process.

4. Define the paradigmatic relations between lingual signs. How do syntagmatic and paradigmatic
relations differ from each other?

It is the paradigmatic relations words have the same role in the sentence and functionally they
can substitute each other.
Syntagmatic relations are in the horizontal dimension in the sentence. Paradigmatic relations are
in the vertical dimension and that is the difference in them.

5. Describe the syntactic level in the hierarchical system of language.

The syntactic level is the forth level of the hierarchical system of the language. It has such function
to transform information while communicating.

6. Give the structural definition of the text and explain it.

7. What does morphology study? When was the term “morphology” invented and what does it
mean?

Morphology studies formation of words and the rules how to form them. T he word morphology
itself is Greek word and means the science of the word forms.

8. Define the concepts of the root and the stem.

The root is a part of word which cannot be divided into the smaller parts and also cannot be
changed and it has lexical meaning. The stem is the suffix which is added to the root and it has
not every time meaning.

9. What kind of morphemes are called bound morphemes? Give examples.

The bound morphemes are morphemes that are always attached to the main words and they are
just parts of the words. Bound morphemes are: suffixes, prefixes, and inflexions. (e.g. colorful)

10. Define the essence of inner inflection. Give examples.


The inner inflection is when vowel is changed within the word for instance noun woman-
women, begin-began-begun.
