Q.2 Answer the following questions (40 marks)


a. Define: (a) Absorptivity and reflectivity (b) Biot number (c) Thermal diffusivity
b. A liquid decomposes by first order kinetics, in a batch reactor 50% of A is converted in a 5 minutes run.
How much longer would it take to reach 75% conversion?
c. A sphere of naphthalene having a radius of 2 mm is suspended in a large volume of still air at 318 K
and 101.3 kPa. The surface temperature of naphthalene can be assumed to be 318 K and its vapor
pressure at this temperature is 0.555 mm Hg. The diffusivity of naphthalene in air at 318 K is 6.92 × 10 -

m2/s. Calculate the rate of evaporation from the surface.
d. Apply the test of exactness to determine whether the differential equation 2xy dx + x2 dy + cosy dy = 0
is exact or not and find its general solution.
e. A glass tube of cross-sectional (S) is filled with a volatile liquid to a certain level. The level is kept
constant. Its open end is subjected to a stream air. Find the equation describing the rate of diffusion of
the vapor of volatile liquid.
f. A feed of a mixture of benzene (Bz) and toluene (Tol) is separated as shown in the figure below.
Calculate the values of the distillate (D), the bottoms (B), the heat duty (heat removed by the water) in
the condenser (QC), and the heat duty (input) to the reboiler (QR). The recycle ratio R/D is 4.
