LIFE AND WORKS OF RIZAL

1. Explain why the opposing views against the Rizal Law were strong in the period of 1950's. What
was the role and the influence in our society of those in the opposition side at that time? Is it
still the same as today?

Answer:
Back in the 1950s, the Philippines, much like Today, was dominated by the religious sector. As
such, the implementation of Senator Claro M. Recto’s Rizal Bill” was highly criticized by the
churches. During the Spanish Occupation, Rizal authored Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
Catholic churches came together and campaigned aggressively against Recto and his bill. They
urged advocates of faith to band together and write to their congressmen and senator to show
opposition. Additionally, Catholic schools, in protests, threatened to close down if the bill was
approved. However, Recto quickly rebutted that if that were to happen, schools would be
nationalized (which the church clearly did not want).
Today, issues between the government and the religious sector have been more prevalent than
ever. Although this time, it’s not just the Catholic Religion that has stake in government affairs.
One of the most notable issues of the modern times concerning the church and the state was
the implementation of the Reproductive Health Law.

2. Read again the important sections cited in the Rizal Law. In your own words, how do you think
that by studying and reading Rizal, it can instill nationalism in the youth? Why is nationalism
important for the young students?

Answer:
By studying Rizal still nationalism and have an impact especially to the young students. By
reading and knowing Rizal’s it gives and shows of being nationalism. We can know what really
happen during Spanish era as Rizal fought for our country without aggression but rather in using
pen and his gift of making a poems, etc. It state in their on how the Filipino countrymen was
being treated the Spanish colonisation on how their dirty works towards us. In Nationalism we
can see our value our worth as citizen in our country that we should stand with pride that we
are Filipino that going to fight and put value our country by putting feeling towards fellow
countrymen. 1. Therefore, a feeling of unity and love would happen among national citizens. In
this way, Nationalism gives strength to the people of the nation.
