1. In no more than three (3) sentences, answer the following questions:

a. Why did the Catholic Church actively oppose the passing of the Rizal Bill?
 The Church continued to oppose the law requiring the study of Rizal's novels
Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo after Recto was elected, claiming that it
would violate the right to free speech and religion. The Rizal Bill's opponents
painted Recto as a communist and an anti-Catholic. The Catholic Church
opposed the measure because it would force the closing of public schools.
b. What provision from the Rizal Bill allowed the government to approve it that answers the
arguments provided by the Catholic Church?
The restrictions placed by the Catholic Church from the Rizal bill allowed the
government to approve it that answers arguments provided by the church. In addition, if
the measure is passed, Catholic schools have threatened to close in protest. Recto
promptly countered that if this happened, schools would be nationalized, something that
the church did not want.
c. Did the Church's views on the study of Jose Rizal's life and works changed over the
years? Why or why not?
 I think the Church's view of Rizal's life and work has changed with time, but the
ideals for which Rizal battled cannot be accomplished by spreading lies and
exaggerations about a Philippine institution that is important to Filipinos' daily
lives. Without a truthful, complete picture of our nation, our institutions, and our
heroes, we won't be aware of our strengths and weaknesses as a people, blind to
both our successes and mistakes, and unable to make informed decisions about
the future. The problem is not just the state of Catholicism in the Philippines or
the rise or fall of Rizal's fame.
