In this exercise I expect my students to give solid opinions working as a group. I want them to formulate
extended answers with a good argument to justify their thoughts in regards to the question being
discussed. First, you may need to put students in small groups of three. Use this grouping technique: hand
out students pictures of food that is healthy/high-calorie/sweet/fatty. Have students discuss the following
question:
Show students a picture of some fast food and some healthy food. Have students throw in their opinions
and make each other questions about the food. We will create a question bank to the get the class started.
Example: do you eat hamburgers? Do you think salads are healthy? … However they need to incorporate
the vocabulary words in their questions. Write all the questions on the board.
While reading.
Have student read the article silently. Tell them to read and understand the main idea of the article. Tell
them to ignore vocabulary they don’t know and rather predict the meaning. On a separate piece of paper
have them write the vocabulary words they don’t understand. Play a game which is to identify meaning
from context. I will say any word and they must find it on the text and then explain it. The group with the
closest definition wins. Also let them do this in Spanish if they can’t do it in English.

Groups will work to make presentation about specific foods. The good, the bad and the ugly. We will build
the food pyramid, consisting of Carbs, Protein, dairy, fats, vegetables, fruit. They will research the
examples of each category, properties, the nutritional information, is it good? Is it bad? Examples: for
example; bread is a form of carbs, but they it has too much sugar.
Students will do the research now, but they will put it together tomorrow. Have them bring pictures, and
have them study for the presentation we will do tomorrow.
