Ball X has an initial velocity of 3.0 ms–1 in a direction along line AB. Ball Y has
a mass of 2.5 kg and an initial velocity of 9.6 ms–1 in a direction at an angle of
60° to line AB.
The two balls collide at point B. The balls stick together and then travel along
the horizontal surface in a direction at right-angles to the line AB, as shown in
Fig. 2.

(a) By considering the components of momentum in the direction from A to B, show

Q2 (a) State the conditions required for the formation of a stationary wave. [2]

(b) The sound from a loudspeaker is detected by a microphone that is connected


to a cathode-ray oscilloscope (c.r.o.). Fig. 1 shows the trace on the screen of
the c.r.o.

In air, the sound wave has a speed of 330 ms–1 and a wavelength of 0.18 m.
(i) Calculate the frequency of the sound wave.

(iii) The intensity of the sound from the loudspeaker is now halved. The

(c) The loudspeaker in (b) is held above a vertical tube of liquid, as shown in Fig. 2.

A tap at the bottom of the tube is opened so that liquid drains out at a constant rate.
The wavelength of the sound from the loudspeaker is 0.18 m. The sound that is
heard first becomes much louder when the liquid surface reaches level A. The next
time that the sound becomes much louder is when the liquid surface reaches level B,
as shown in Fig. 3.
(i) Calculate the vertical distance between level A and level B.

Q3 An electron is travelling in a straight line through a vacuum with a constant speed
of 1.5 × 107 ms–1.
The electron enters a uniform electric field at point A, as shown in Fig. 1.

The electron continues to move in the same direction until it is brought to rest by the
electric field at point B. Distance AB is 2.0 cm.
(a) State the direction of the electric field.
