Job Description As Chief Seismologist in WAPDA

i. Technical/Administrative head of the Seismic Studies Directorate which has

been established at Tarbela Dam Project for the seismic safety monitoring of
large Dams and Hydropower Structures, under planning or construction by
WAPDA in the seismically active Northern Pakistan. Under the supervision of
Directorate of Seismic Studies WAPDA, a network of 29 Microseismic Stations
are operating in the Northern Pakistan (around Diamer-Basha Dam, Dasu &
Bunji Hydropower Projects), and transmitting the data through VSAT link to
Central Recording Station (CRS) located at Tarbela. At CRS, Tarbela, all the
seismic data is processed and analyzed through latest state of art ANTELOPE
SOFTWARE.

ii. Review seismic parameters for existing WAPDA Projects and propose evaluation
of seismic risk studies. Seismic Hazard Evaluation (SHE) for large Dams and
Hydropower Projects.

iii. Analysis and Interpretation of Strong Motion Accelerographs (SMA) installed in

and around Tarbela Dam for safety monitoring purpose.

iv. Planning for the installation of Micro Seismic Monitoring Systems (MSMS)
around large Dams and Hydropower Projects in the seismically active regions of
Northern Areas.

v. Determination of subsurface velocity for accurate location of microseismic

events. Processing, analysis and interpretation of microseismic data through
latest state of art software.

2
vi. Review Periodic/Annual seismic inspection reports related to different WAPDA
Projects and implementation.

vii. Review of Seismic and Geophysical reports written by Consultants of large Dams
and Hydropower Projects.

viii. Supervision of the liaison between WAPDA and Foreign Consultants related to
seismic studies in the Northern Areas of Pakistan.

ix. Meetings with Consultants for planning and survey to install seismic
instrumentations required for the seismic safety monitoring of WAPDA large
Dams and Hydropower Structures.
