PRODUCT SERVICE BULLETIN # 137 PRODUCT: HR580 & HR680 Injectors REFERENCE: HRD580 & HRG8O Injector Traction Cylinders ‘We have experienced failures in an intemal seal of the traction cylinders used on the HR580 and HR680 injectors. The fallures occurred in traction cylinders in service and builtin 2007, Such failures in traction cylinders are extremely detrimental to the injector’s safe operation and deserve immediate attention. The failures have been {raced back through the manufacturer ofthe traction cylinder to a faulty batch of seals, The seals in traction cylinders of injectors provided between November 2007 and August of 2008 should be replaced immediately. Hydra Rig will supply the seal kits free of charge. The new traction cylinder seal kits should be installed per the attached procedure usit parts called out in the seal kit, Hydra Rig part number HSX00157. These kits can be installed without Hydra Rig assistance using the procedure included with the seal kit. ‘Seals within the traction cylinder assembly should be replaced no less than every 5 years to ensure proper function of this critical component as recommended by the ‘manufacturer. Ensure protection ofthe rod thread, 2. Secure the cylinder in a chain vise or other type unit. | 3, Remove the por plugs and drain all oll rom the cylinder. Leave port plugs removed to maintain a vented to atmosphere condition Unscrew and remove threaded tail cap Romove the rod from barrel using rubber mallet Remove rod wiper and wear band as necessary. blunted screwdriver or pick type too! will suffice. Use caution as to not scratch any seal groove surfaces, 7. Remove the snap ring using internal snap ring pliers with straight tips (090° ciameter) sap rng pliers. 8, From blind end remove brass besring, modular bearing and rod seal 8. Remove both O-rings from threaded tall cap and piston seals from the piston, 410. Clean all parts. Ensure no cleaning solvents or chemicals come in contact with the replacement seals. 2. IMPORTANT: Do not attempt remove piston from rod as itis permanently tached using Loctite 271. Any forced attempt todo so wil key result in thread ndor surface damage. 41, Remove all used seals, keeping the brass bearing ring and snap ring 412, To repack the cylinder, if the orginal cylinder contained a brass bearing, discard the bag of seals that does not include the yellow piston seals and the yellow rod seal. Ifthe ‘original cylinder did not contain a brass bearing use both bags of seals included replacing lke seals wth ke seals. 413, Ensure all parts are clean and fre of any foreign olor debris, 14. Install the O-rings on the threaded tal cap. The small moisture seal goes behind the threads and the larger O-ing goes into the O.D. groove. 16, Install the two yellow piston seals on the Piston withthe lips facing outward. 16. Remove the barrel from the chain vse, stand barrel upright on table and install the wear band into bottom groove and the rod wiper ino the top groove of the gland extension, 17, Turn barrel upside down, install the black modular bearing (either side) fret 18. Install the rod seal wth the lip facing toward the piston end of the barrel, 419. Install the brass bearing 20. (Once the rod chamfer is past the rod seal, you may use a mallet to light tap it through. 28. Lubricate al piston seals with Lidok Lithium Grease EP or equivalent 24, Push the rod al the way tothe extent of its stroke. 26, Install and tighten the thread tall cap Testing Steps: 1. Funotion Testing - Using Hydraulic pressure, stroke cylinder a minimum of 3 full ‘extend and retract cycles with cylinder ports ofiented upwards, Cylinder movement will 'b visually inspected for any unnecessary chatter and/or stalin. 2, Pressure Test —A fll function test ofthe cyinder for the maximum operational pressure ‘9f 3000 PSI should be held for 60 seconds for both the extend and retract cycles. During the pressure test, the cylinder is to be visually inspected for any external leakage. ‘All sealing surfaces and weld locations are to be inspected. 3. Internal Bypass Check — Remove either the extend or retract hydraulic line and ‘operate full operational pressure onthe opposing por. The open port should be checked for any fui by pass that may occur while holding pressure on the opposite port.
