Work Sheet on Duct Sizing and Cooling load calculation

1. Determine the fan power and the dimensions of a square duct if the allowable frictional pressure drop
is 4.5pa/m using equal friction method. Take the loss coefficient for branches to be 0.45, upstream to
downstream to be 0.8, elbow to be 0.67 and the diffuser outlet to be 2.5. using the following table and
schematic diagram.
Section Dimension Sectional
description
A-B 8m
B-E 12m B-C=C-D=D-E
F-C 2m F-C=D-G=H-E
B-I 6m
I-L 12M I-J=J-K=K-L
J-M 2m J-M=K-N=L-O

2. Determine the fan power in the index of run and the dimensions of a rectangular duct if the allowable
frictional pressure drop is 3pa/m using equal friction method. Take the loss coefficient for branches
to be 0.45, upstream to downstream to be 0.8, elbow to be 0.67 and the diffuser outlet to be 2.5.

3. A 100% outdoor summer air conditioning system has a room sensible heat load of 35 kW and a room latent

heat load of 8 kW. The required inside conditions are 25oC and 50% relative humidity, and the outdoor

design conditions are 35oC and 40% RH. The air is supplied to the room at a dry bulb temperature of 15oC.

Find (a) the required mass flow rate of air (b) moisture content of supply air, (c) Sensible, latent heat loads

on the coil, if Barometric pressure = 1 atm

4. A conference room for seating 100 persons is to be maintained at 22°C dry bulb temperature and 60%

relative humidity. The outdoor conditions are 40°C dry bulb temperature and 27oC wet bulb temperature.

The various loads in the auditorium are as follows: Sensible and latent heat loads per person, 80W and 50W

respectively; lights and fans, 15,000W; sensible heat gain through glass, walls, ceiling, etc., 15,000 W. The

air infiltration is 20m3/min and fresh air supply is 100m3/min. Two-third of recirculated room air and one-

third of fresh air are mixed before entering the cooling coil. The by-pass factor of the coil is 0.1. Determine

apparatus dew point, the grand total heat load and effective room sensible heat factor.

5. A laboratory 30mx20mx4m high is to be air conditioned. The 30m wall faces north. The north wall has two

doors of 2.5 m x 3 m each. The south wall has four glass windows of 2 m x 1.5 m each. The east and west

walls also have four windows of the same size. The lighting load is 15 W fluorescent per m2 floor area. The

infiltration is one air change. The solar heat gain factors (SHGF) for south, east and west glass are 150, 50

and 350 W/m2 respectively. The overall heat transfer coefficients for walls, roof, floor, door and windows

are 2.5, 2, 3, 1.5 and 6 W/m2K respectively. The corrected equivalent temperature differences for north,

south, east, west walls, roof and floor are 12, 15, 12, 17, 20 and 2.5°C respectively. There are 100 persons

with sensible and latent heat loads of 75 W and 55 W each respectively. The ventilation requirement is

0.3m3/min per person. The outdoor condition is 43°C dry bulb temperature and 0.0277 kg/kg of dry air of

humidity ratio. The indoor condition is 25°C dry bulb temperature and 0.01 kg/kg of dry air of humidity

ratio. Use a factor of1.25for fluorescent light. Determine room sensible heat load and room latent heat load

with 5% safety factor, 5% for fan power, 1% leakage of supply air and 0.5% heat leakage to supply air duct.
