LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET 5.1

Word Formation
 The word-formation process is the process by which new words are produced either by
modification of existing words or by complete innovation, which in turn become a part of the
language.
 Word Formation means forming new words to add up to our language.
 The invention or addition of new words actually takes place in 5 specific ways (Acronym, Blending,
Clipping, Compounding and Eponym.) these are known as 5 processes of word formation.

COMPLETION TEST

Task 1: Acronym: Tell what the following acronyms stand for. Write your answer on the space provided in
each number.

 Acronyms are new words formed from the initial letters of a set of other
words. These can be forms such as CD (“compact disk”) or VCR (“video
cassette recorder”) where the pronunciation consists of saying each
separate letter. But, more typically, acronyms are pronounced as new
single words, as in NATO, NASA or UNESCO. These examples have kept their
capital letters, but many acronyms simply become everyday terms such as
LASER (“light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”), RADAR
(“radio detecting and ranging”), SCUBA (“self-contained underwater
breathing apparatus”) and ZIP (“zone improvement plan”) code.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET 5.5a

Task 5: Eponym: Match the Eponyms. Circle the correct answer.

 An eponym is a person, place, or thing from which something takes its

name. Examples of eponyms are far-ranging, from book titles to time-
periods to medications. It is easy to understand how eponyms develop:
inventions often take on the name of the scientist or engineer,
geographical locations take on the name of the discoverer, and trends are
named after the famous people that started them. Such as Fahrenheit (from
the German, Gabriel Fahrenheit), volt (from the Italian, Alessandro Volta)
and watt (from the Scottish inventor, James Watt).
 The word eponym comes from the Greek word epōnumos, which meant “given as
a name, giving one’s name to someone or something,” originally from the
prefix epi-, meaning “upon” and the word onoma, meaning “name.”
