MINUTES OF 2nd MUET SUBJECT UNIT MEETING 2020

1. Chairperson’s Speech
1.1. Mdm. Cheong Peck Hwa (HoU) thanked the unit members for their kind attendance.

2. Confirmation of previous minutes


2.1. Mr.Mani proposed that the minutes of the previous meeting be passed and it was
seconded by Mdm. Lyza binti Taha.

3. Matters arising
3.1. HoU announced that the trial exam would be postponed to 1 st October 2020 and Trial
Speaking Test would be in September, since MUET Session 2 20202 had been
postponed to 31st October 2020.

3.2. She also highlighted that Excel 2 for MUET had been cancelled and that Semester 1
students would only sit for the end-of-year exam.

4. Post Mortem of MUET Excel 1 2020 Results


4.1. A total of 142 students sat for the exam.

4.2. Analysis of the overall achievement is as below:


4.2.1.1. Percentage of passes (Band 3-6) : 86.6% (123 students)
4.2.1.2. Percentage of failures (Band 1-2) : 13.4% (19 students)
4.3. HoU summarized that there was only 1 student who obtained Band 6, from Sem
2/3A4.

4.4. HoU summarized that some students had difficulty in choosing their reading answers
as the distractors were very close.

4.5. She added that the students were weak in basic command of the language as they did
not use the language after MUET lesson, preferring to use mother tongue.

4.6. Students also did not answer the question posed on whether they agreed that sports
should be emphasized in schools but merely stated general benefits of sports.

4.7. She also highlighted problems during teaching and learning session.
4.7.1. Students had different proficiency level.

4.7.2. Even after repeatedly given feedback, they made the same mistakes as they
lacked a good command and use of the language.

4.7.3. Students showed lack of maturity as they did not read widely.

4.7.4. Students did not realise the importance of MUET despite being reminded
repeatedly of its importance. Instead, they treated it as a ‘non-studying’ subject
and did not put in much effort towards learning the subject. They also prioritised
other subjects and course work.

4.8. HoU also carried out a discussion on Band 2 and 1 candidates’ performance for the
test was also carried out and the reasons were compiled. Refer attachment.

5. Strategies to improve MUET results/ teaching


5.1. The unit would conduct the workshop on Writing.

5.2. HoU reminded teachers to focus more on reading exercises and to use different types
of texts, besides giving ample exercises on writing.

5.3. HoU reminded teachers to always give feedback after every practice or test.

6. Other matters
6.1. Semester 3 SOW & RPM for Term 2 2020
6.1.1. HoU distributed the revised RPM for Semester 2/3 to be used with the existing
SOW. She added that she did not make any changes to the SOW.

6.1.2. HoU highlighted some changes in dates for Semester 2/3.

6.2. Allocation of classes/teachers and distribution of students for Semester 1
6.2.1. HoU announced that there was no change in class allocation and presented the
class distribution for Semester 1.

6.2.2. HoU reminded teachers to follow the unit’s policy when it concerns
distribution of students. She added that students should remain in their respective
MUET class unless they switch stream. She explained that this was to make sure
that the students are equally distributed to make up for lack of MUET teachers
and fair number of students in each class.

6.3. SOW & RPM for Semester 1 2020 & e-prema


6.3.1. HoU distributed the new SOW and RPM; and explained the skills and sub
skills for the new CEFR aligned MUET.

6.3.2. HoU stated that the skills and sub skills in e-prema had been edited but the
system administrator would only update e-prema in November thus she
suggested that teachers key in the skills and sub skills manually.

6.4. Textbook & References for Semester 1 2020


6.4.1. HoU announced that the unit would still use Oxford’s MUET Ace-Ahead
book as the textbook.

6.5. Tests & Examinations for Semester 3/1 2020
6.5.1. She reminded teachers to be careful about the presentation of question papers
with the layout and quality of questions.
6.5.2. She also highlighted exam dates for Semester 3 and 1 and reminded item
setters for Semester 1 and 3 2020 to be prepared. Semester 3 would follow the
current format, while semester 1 would be using the revised format.

6.6. Unit Programmes for 2020


6.6.1. Postponement of Public Speaking Competition 2020
6.6.1.1. HoU informed the unit that the public speaking competition would be
postponed due to MCO. However, the trophies were ready and would be
used kept for next year.

6.6.2. Other programmes


6.6.2.1. Listening and writing workshop
6.6.2.1.1. HoU announced that the writing workshop would be conducted at
least a week before the actual written test (31st Oct 2020.) She
added that she has proposed to have the workshop on 21st Oct
2020, while the listening workshop cancelled.

6.6.2.1.2. She added that she has contacted Ms. Maziyah to conduct the
workshop and that she is still waiting for her to confirm the date.

6.6.2.2. Speakers’ Corner (Post-MUET Activity)


6.6.2.2.1. HoU also informed the unit that Speakers’ Corner (Post MUET
Activity) would be postponed until further notice due to RMCO.

6.6.2.3. Action Research


6.6.2.3.1. Mdm. Tana informed the unit members that there are no latest
updates on the colloquium due to RMCO.

6.7. Teaching Materials/Aids
6.7.1. HoU informed the teachers that she has bought Pelangi’s CEFR-aligned
MUET book as for teacher’s reference. She has also ordered Leftclick’s MUET
Writing practice book for teachers.

6.7.2. HoU reminded that the unit had bought 4 stopwatches using the PCG fund
(2019) and can be borrowed for Speaking Trial Exam.

6.7.3. HoU also informed that she has used the PCG fund to buy a Sony DVD Player
for the exam use and it will be kept by Mdm. Lyza, the MUET exam secretary.
