THE LOVERS WHO BECAME BUTTERFLIES

A long time ago in a certain part of China, only boys were allowed to go to school. It was
thought that girls should not be educated, but should remain ignorant.
Zhu Ying Tai was the daughter of a wealthy merchant, and she really wanted to get education.
She was jealous of her brothers when they started school, and she was determined that she herself
should go to school as well and get an education. Day and night she kept begging her parents. Until
such time they allowed her to get education but she would disguise as a male.
She did well in school and didn’t find it hard to pretend to be a boy. There was only one boy
she became friendly with. His name was Liang Shan Bo, who was a studious young man with very
gentle manners. They often studied together, and gradually they became good friends. Years passed,
they felt strong attraction with one another. Zhu revealed her true self to Liang. The boy was shocked
and angry; however, he was relieved realizing that he loved Zhu.
One day, Zhu was surprised that her parents arranged a marriage for her to a wealthy young man.
Knowing that their daughter had a lover, Zhu’s parents forbid them to see each other. Liang died of
too much sadness.
On her wedding day, Zhu visited the cemetery where Liang is buried. As she kneels down by the
grave,
a butterfly came out from Liang’s grave. It circled around her head, and later she realized that her
arms turned into butterfly wings. Zhu was happy that she was reunited with her lover.
