THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING OUR COUNTRY’S HISTORY

“Time in its irresistible and ceaseless flow carries along on its flood all created things and
drowns them in the depths of obscurity, no matter if they be quite unworthy of mention, or most
noteworthy and important, and thus, as the tragedian says: "he brings from the darkness all
things to birth, and thus all things born are enveloped in the night."
But the tale of history forms a mighty defense against the stream of time, and to some extent
checks its irresistible flow, and, of all things done in it, as much as history has taken over, it
secures and binds together these things, and does not allow them to slip away into the abyss of
oblivion.”
The aforementioned quote above is written in history, almost a thousand years ago, by a
byzantine princess & physician named Anna Komnene. It perfectly explains one of the reasons
why studying history is important;
Studying history is important in order to not let time bury the wisdom of the past into an oblivion
of obscurity. History binds the past to the present and the future, that is why it is vital to research
and know them.
It helps explain how the present was affected by the past and how we can learn and improve
from it in order to create a better future.
It is important to learn and study our country’s history in order to not forget our roots, our
culture, and the context of everything that is happening in the present that will also affect our
future.
History explains why our current generations do what we do, it explains our identity, it explains
our belief, our society’s structure, and how it became that way.
It gives us context.
It can also help us understand and respect other ways of doing things, and to value our own
culture and beliefs.
History also provides a means of transcending death, as long as there are those who would learn
of it. The lessons from our ancestor and the people involve in our history will serve a purpose
and will transcend its creator’s death
In conclusion, studying our country’s history is important in order to preserve the lessons from
the past so that time will not bury it and so that we can use it to our advantage in the present and
the future.
