Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR) Activities in Aditya Birla Group

WHAT IS CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR)?

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept that suggests that it is the


responsibility of the corporations operating within society to contribute towards economic, social
and environmental development that creates positive impact on society at large. Although there
is no fixed definition, however the concept revolves around that fact the corporations needs to
focus beyond earning just profits. The term became popular in the 1960s and now is formidable
part of business operations.
Relevance of the topic
1. Being a socially responsible company can bolster a company's image and build its brand.
2. Social responsibility empowers employees to leverage the corporate resources at their
disposal to do good.
3. Formal corporate social responsibility programs can boost employee morale and lead to
greater productivity in the workforce.

POLICY STATEMENT:
We at Aditya Birla Group, reaching out to underserved communities is part of our DNA.
We believe in the trusteeship concept. This entails transcending business Interests and grappling
with the “quality of life” challenges that underserved communities face, and working towards
making a meaningful difference to them.
Our vision is “to actively contribute to the social and economic development of the
communities in which we operate. In so doing build a better, sustainable way of life for the
weaker sections of society and raise the country’s human development index”

Objectives:
The Objectives of the CSR projects will be as follows:
1. To carry out CSR activities in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable
manner that is transparent and ethical
2. To integrate the core values of the company with the philosophy of corporate social
responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability.
3. To incorporate the spirit of CSR and Sustainability to the employees at all levels and to
infuse into all the activities, processes, operations and transactions of the company.

Specific practices found in the industry:


Projects are carried out under the aegis of the Aditya Birla Centre for Community
Initiatives and Rural Development, with Mrs. Rajashree Birla as the Chairperson, and admirably
supported by Dr. Pragnya Ram, Group Executive President, Group Head – CSR, Legacy
Documentation & Archives. The Centre provides the strategic direction and the thrust areas for
our work ensuring performance management as well. Our team comprises 150 qualified
professionals and on-ground force of 1,000 field workers. Furthermore, the Board of Directors,
CSR committees provide insights and add value to our work. Our investments globally in CSR
exceed Rs. 500 crores. For over 50 years now, the Aditya Birla Group has engaged in impactful,
welfare-driven activities in India and globally. They work in 7,000 villages, reaching out to 9
million people annually. Over 60 per cent of these people live below the poverty line and belong
to marginalised and vulnerable sections of society.

Conclusion:
The trainee was able to learn various aspects of CSR activities. The trainee was able to
talk to different employees, HR Manager of the company and agency supervisor about CSR and
related information. But many details were not being shared by them to the trainee because much
information was highly confidential.
