Assignment-1
Submission date: 01.10.2020
Instructions:
1. Answer all questions and upload in Google classroom before the deadline.
2. Write your name and roll number on top of each page.
3. Put page number for each page
1. Explain about cascaded system. List out its advantages and demerits.
2. Explain the Ortho-para conversion of Hydrogen in cryogenic gas liquefaction systems.
3. Why simple Linde-Hampson system cannot be used for liquefaction of gases like He, H
and Ne?
4. Determine the thermal conductivity of air at 250 K and 101.3 kPa if the mean free path of
air at this condition is 49 nm, the gas constant for air is 287 J/kgK, the specific heat ratio
is 1.4 and the specific heat at constant volume is 716.5 J/kgK
5. A Claude system using Nitrogen as the working fluid operates between 101.3 kPa and 300
K and 5.066 MPa. The expander flow ratio is 0.6 and the expander work is utilized to aid
compressor work. Working fluid conditions at inlet of the expander is 270 K and
5.066MPa.
Determine the liquid yield, the total work per unit mass of gas compressed and the work to
liquefy a unit mass of gas in the system.
6. Define FOM and its significance
7. Discuss the significance of heat exchanger effectiveness in a gas liquefaction system
8. Explain the effect of compressor and expander efficiency on the system performance
