Fluid Kinematics and

Dynamics
Types of Flow
 Depending upon fluid properties
 Ideal and Real flow.
 Compressible and Incompressible flow.
 Depending upon properties of flow
 Laminar and turbulent flow.
 Steady and unsteady flow.
 Uniform and Non-uniform flow.
 Rotational and Irrotational flow.
 One, two and three dimensional flow
Uniform and Non-uniform flow
 Uniform flow:
 The flow in which velocity at a given time does not
change with respect to space (length of direction of
flow) is called as uniform flow.
 i.e., The flow conditions DO NOT change with
position.
 e.g. Constant discharge though a constant diameter
pipe.

 Non – Uniform flow :

 The flow in which velocity at a given time changes
with respect to space (length of direction of flow) is
called as non – uniform flow.
 If at a given instant, the velocity is not the same at
every point the flow
 e.g., Constant discharge through variable diameter
pipe.
 e.g., Flow of a river
 Steady uniform flow:
 Conditions do not change with position in the stream or with time.

 Steady non uniform flow:

 Conditions change from point to point in the stream but do not change with time.

 Unsteady uniform flow:

 At a given instant in time the conditions at every point are the same, but will change with
time.

 Unsteady non uniform flow:

 Every condition of the flow may change from point to point and with time at every point.
The Stream Function
Advantages:
 Firstly, A single variable (ψ) replaces
two variables(u and v)—once ψ is
known, we can generate both u and v
using,

 Secondly, it turns out that the stream

function has useful physical
significance . Namely, Curves of
constant ψ are streamlines of the flow.
