Columbia

HISTORY 1
Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Columbia Sportswear Company has been making gear so that Pacific
Northwesterners can enjoy the outdoors for more than 70 years. At the helm for over 40 years has been our
Chairman, Gert Boyle. Her Tough Mother persona has grown Columbia into the global sportswear company
that it is today—still based in Portland, still making no-nonsense apparel and footwear to keep you WARM,
DRY, COOL and PROTECTED no matter what. Our unique Pacific Northwest heritage and Boyle family
irreverence is what sets us apart from the competition.

We're a family business gone global. Chairman Gert Boyle's parents — German nationals who fled Nazi
Germany in 1938 — purchased a small hat company upon their arrival in Portland and named it Columbia Hat
Company, after the river that inspired their new home. This humble beginning was of huge significance to the
family, marking new found freedom and a fresh start. Her husband later took over, and after he died Gert ran
the show, going from housewife to executive overnight. Today, her son Tim Boyle is our longtime president
and CEO. The family — like our business — has experienced its ups and downs, but enjoying the outdoors
together has always been integral to its success.

Columbia is made up of real people who are as passionate about the outdoors as you are. And, while our
products are available around the world, we're based in the great Pacific Northwest, where majestic forests
frame volcanic mountains and a rugged coast. This is where we hike, ride, fish, hunt, climb, camp, golf, paddle,
run, and just enjoy fresh air with friends.

About
One of the largest outerwear manufacturers in the world, Columbia Sportswear Company designs,
manufactures, and markets outdoor apparel and footwear, distributing its merchandise to more than 10,000
retailers in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia-New Zealand. It is the leading skiwear
manufacturer in the United States and also sells lines of snowboard apparel, hunting and fishing clothing, casual
sportswear, and accessories such as mittens, hats, scarves, sunglasses, and ski goggles. Columbia’s rise to the
top began during the 1980s, when Gertrude Boyle and her son, Tim, orchestrated the remarkable growth of their
family-owned business nearly 50 years after the company began doing business as Columbia Hat Company.
With mother and son at the helm, Columbia’s sales grew quickly after the company entered the skiwear market
in 1986 with its trademarked Interchange System of layered outerwear. The company made a reputation for
itself in part through an eye-catching advertising campaign featuring the chairwoman as hard-driven “Mother
Boyle.” The company is a global supplier of high-quality outerwear, with distribution in over 30 countries. The
Company operates a few of its own retail outlets, with stores in Portland, Oregon, Nagoya, Japan, and in
Sydney, Australia. Columbia also sells discounted goods through its own outlet stores, with eight in the United
States. The company went public in 1998. About two-thirds of the stock remains in the hands of the Boyle
family

The North Face, Inc.

History
The North Face began in 1966 as a climbing equipment retail store in San
Francisco, founded by Douglas Tompkins and his wife, Susie Tompkins. 2 It was
acquired two years later by Kenneth "Hap" Klopp. 3

The North Face takes its company logo from a stylized drawing of Half Dome, in
Yosemite National Park. 4

In 2000, The North Face was acquired by VF Corporation for US$25.4 million, becoming a wholly owned
subsidiary. 5 6

In December 2008, The North Face filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of
Missouri against The South Butt, its creator James A. Winkelmann Jr., and a company which handled the firm's
marketing and manufacturing. In the legal action, The North Face alleged trademark infringement and sought
injunctive relief. 7 After the court ordered mediation in the case, the parties reached a closed settlement
agreement on April 1, 2010; however, in October 2012, Winkelmann admitted in court that he and his father
violated the settlement agreement with The North Face and agreed to pay US$65,000, an amount that will be
reduced by US$1,000 for every month of compliance. 8 9

In May 2019, Leo Burnett Tailor Made, a marketing agency for The North Face Brazil, revealed that they had
surreptitiously replaced photos of popular outdoor destinations on Wikipedia with photos featuring North Face
products in an attempt to get these products to appear more prominently in search engine results. Following
widespread media coverage and criticism from the Wikimedia Foundation, The North Face apologized for the
campaign, ended it, and the product placement was undone. 10 11

Tommy Hilfiger

About
Founded: 1968, San Francisco, California, United States
Founders: Douglas Tompkins, Susie Tompkins Buell

Website : https://www.thenorthface.com/

History
Background and founding (1960s–1990s)

Tommy Hilfiger’s career in fashion began in 1968, when he co-founded a clothing and record store named
People’s Place in upstate New York. Using $150 12 he'd saved from working at a petrol station as startup money,
he oversaw the expansion of the company into a chain 13 of ten stores. Despite meeting with initial success,
People's Place filed for bankruptcy in 1977. In 1979 Hilfiger moved to New York City to pursue a career as a
fashion designer, 14 working on several different labels including Jordache Jeans. 15 In the early 1980s he met
Mohan Murjani, an Indian textile magnate hoping to launch a line of men’s clothing. With Murjani’s backing in
1985 Hilfiger debuted his first signature collection, 16 which featured modernized versions of button-down
shirts, chinos, and other classic preppy styles. The casual youthful attitude of these first designs would remain a
trait of the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation's later collections. 17 The new clothing line made its debut with a high-
profile marketing campaign, which included a large billboard in Times Square by advertiser George Lois. 18 The
Tommy Hilfiger brand left Murjani International in 1989, with Silas Chou instead providing financial
backing. 19 That year Lawrence Stroll and Joel Horowitz, both former executives of Ralph Lauren, were hired as
executives of the newly formed company Tommy Hilfiger, Inc., which had an initial focus on casual male
sportswear.

About
Since Tommy Hilfiger introduced his first men’s sportswear collection in 1985, the brand has expanded to
encompass a complete premium lifestyle on a global scale. Tommy Hilfiger delivers premium styling, quality
and value to consumers worldwide under the TOMMY HILFIGER and TOMMY JEANS brands, with a breadth
of collections including HILFIGER COLLECTION, TOMMY HILFIGER TAILORED, men’s, women’s and
kids sportswear, denim, accessories, and footwear. In addition, the brand is licensed for a range of products,
including fragrances, eyewear, watches and home goods.

Patagonia

History

Mannequin dressed in Patagonia clothing and gear

Yvon Chouinard, an accomplished rock climber, 27 began selling hand forged mountain
climbing gear in 1957 through his company Chouinard Equipment. 28 He worked alone
selling his gear until 1965 when he partnered with Tom Frost in order to improve his
products and address the growing supply and demand issue he faced. 29

In 1970, Chouinard obtained rugby shirts from Scotland that he wore while climbing
because the collar kept the climbing sling from hurting his neck. 30

Great Pacific Iron Works, 31 Patagonia’s first store, opened in 1973 in the former Hobson
meat-packing plant at Santa Clara St, in Ventura, near Chouinard’s blacksmith shop. 32 In 1981, Patagonia and
Chouinard Equipment were incorporated within Great Pacific Iron Works. 33 In 1984, Chouinard changed the
name of Great Pacific Iron Works to Lost Arrow Corporation. 34

A Patagonia store in Portland, Oregon, was located in a renovated 1895-built former warehouse until moving to
a new location in 2017.

Patagonia has expanded its product line to include apparel targeted towards other
sports, such as surfing. 35 In addition to clothing, they offer other products such as
backpacks, sleeping bags, and camping food. 36

Starting in April 2017, certain Patagonia merchandise that is in good condition can be
returned for new merchandise credits. The used merchandise gets cleaned and repaired
and sold on their "Worn Wear" website. 37

Helly Hansen

History
Helly Juell Hansen had been at sea since the age of 14 and in 1877, at the age of 35, he and his wife Maren
Margarethe began producing oilskin jackets, trousers, sou'westers and tarpaulins, made from coarse linen
soaked in linseed oil. Over the first five years they sold around 10,000 pieces.

In 1878 the company won a diploma for excellence at the Paris Expo, and began exporting its products.

After Helly Juell Hansen's death in 1914, company leadership passed on to his son Helly Hansen, an
experienced merchant.

In the 1920s a new fabric, which Helly Hansen called Linox, was developed. Over the next 30 years the name
Linox would transfer to a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) application.

A change for the brand came in 1949 when Helox was developed. The sheet of translucent PVC plastic sewn
into waterproof coats and hats became a popular item. About 30,000 Helox coats were produced each month.
Plarex, a heavier-duty version of Helox, backed by fabric, was developed for workwear.

A product developed for the outdoor and workwear markets was Fibrepile which is an insulation layer for
wearing under waterproofs. It was used by Swedish lumbermen, who discovered that it offered insulation
against the cold, and ventilated well during hard, physical work in the forest.

The layering story was completed in the 1970s, with the development of LIFA. The polypropylene fibre used in
LIFA kept the skin dry and warm by pushing moisture away from the body, making it the ideal base-layer fabric
for outdoor and workwear use. It was the birth of the 3-layer systems of dress with LIFA close to the body,
Fibrepile as an insulation layer, and rainwear for protection.

During the 1970s the company developed survival suits for offshore oil workers in the North Sea. In 1980 the
company's breathable, waterproof fabric system, called Helly Tech, was launched. Helly Tech garments use
both hydrophilic and microporous technology. Hydrophilic garments have water-loving molecular chains which
pass water vapor to the outside. Microporous garments have tiny pores that allow water vapor to pass out of the
fabric without letting rain droplets in.

Helly Hansen clothing developed a following among urban youth in the late 1990s, particularly in North
England and with the hip hop culture in the US.[3] The brand developed a mass appeal and is now sold in sports
shops, not only the hiking and specialized clothing shops of before.

In 2012, Helly Hansen introduced their H2 Flow Technology with the H2 Flow Jacket. The H2 Flow Jacket
allows the wearer to regulate their body temperature.
