MODULE 1.

ASSESSMENT

Answer each item.

1. Provide a concise answer to the following questions:

a. What is mathematics?
 Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and
arrangement.
b. Where is mathematics?
 Mathematics is nowhere and everywhere. We can see mathematics all around us
in products, computer designs, in the ripples made by a pebble splashed into a
pond by a curious child, and in a thousand other things there it is, but ever
elusive, recommending itself vicariously.
c. How is mathematics done?
 Mathematics is done by answering questions that arise when dealing with
mathematical tools or mathematical problems. A typical mathematical
problem is a question about patterns or structure of some families of objects.
2. Explain why it is said that “Mathematics is the queen of all sciences.”
 Yes, Mathematics is called “Queen of all Sciences” this is because every thing
around you contains mathematics. Even while you are reading this there's an
algorithm in the back-end which uses mathematics in it.
Also look at your surroundings, there is physics present all around, your
appliances uses physics for working on electricity, your vehicle also uses physics
(acceleration of your vehicle mentioned, Maximum torque, horse Power, etc.) all
these thing are calculated using physics, and physics is nothing but an
application of Mathematics.
3. List five (5) items or objects which you think exhibit the golden ratio. Explain your answer.
 Seed heads. The head of a flower is also subject to Fibonaccian processes.
 Animal bodies. Even our bodies exhibit proportions that are consistent with
Fibonacci numbers.
 Fingers. Looking at the length of our fingers, each section — from the tip of the
base to the wrist — is larger than the preceding one by roughly the ratio of phi.
 Faces. Faces, both human and nonhuman, abound with examples of the Golden
Ratio.
 DNA molecules. The DNA molecule measures 34 angstroms long by 21
angstroms wide for each full cycle of its double helix spiral. These numbers, 34
and 21, are numbers in the Fibonacci series, and their ratio 1.6190476 closely
approximates Phi, 1.6180339.
4. What is a fractal? Name an item or object that exhibits fractal.
 A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are
self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process
over and over in an on going feedback loop.
 Rivers
5. What role is played by mathematics in the following areas?
a. Economics
 The reason why economists adopted mathematics as the language (and yes it is
a language!) to create their models is that it is super super hard to be imprecise
with mathematics.
b. Psychology
 According to a Wiley Online Library article, mathematics-based psychology
deals with the issues of “learning, memory, classifications, choice response time,
decision making, attention and problem solving.”
c. Music
 Mathematics also plays a pivotal role in musical harmony. Essentially, harmony
is the combination of musical sounds as perceived by the ear and is analyzed in
terms of math based concepts such as frequency, pitch, and chord progression.
d. Data Science
 Mathematics is very important in the field of data science as concepts within
mathematics aid in identifying patterns and assist in creating algorithms. The
understanding of various notions of Statistics and Probability Theory are key for
the implementation of such algorithms in data science
