TENSE REVIEW

There are times in speaking and


writing when only one tense is used
predominately; however, when
speaking or writing, a person
generally use several different tenses
and moves from one tense to the
other correctly and quickly.

correctly. Real life events and your feeling
about these event will determine what you

Look at the following sentence
from a student composition
Incorrect : My parents have sent me to
University of Indonesia after my
graduation from high school.

The form of the present perfect tense is incorrect –


have + participle – but the meaning of the word
sent in the sentence refers to an activity that
usually happens only one time and then finished.
How many times can you graduate from high
school ?
After graduation, how many times your parents
send you to the same university for the first time ?

PRESENT
WHEN DO WE USE IT?
Kapan kita gunakan ?
The simple present says that something was true

in the past, is true in the present, and will be true

in the future.

(The simple present menyatakan sesuatu tetap sama keadaannya seperti itu, baik dalam waktu
lampau, saat sekarang maupun maupun yang akan datang adalah benar

For examples:

 Water consists of hydrogen and oxygen. == Air selalu seperti itu.

 The average person breathes 21,600.

 The world is round. Dunia bundar.

 The Moslem always conduct Praying Friday on Friday. Sholat Jumat selalu pada hari Jumat.
WHEN DO WE USE IT?
The simple present is used to express habitual or
everyday activities. The simple present digunakan
untuk mengungkap kebiasaan atau aktivitas
sehari-hari.
 I study for two hours every night.
 I get up at seven every morning.
 She always eats a sandwich for lunch.
WHEN DO WE USE IT
This tense can be used for the future situation
when it is a schedule.
Tenses ini digunakan juga untuk mengungkap situasi yang
akan datang (yang akan terjadi nanti)tapi sudah terjadwal.
For examples:
 My class begins next week.
Benar kuliah dimulai minggu depan, tapi karena sudah
ditetapkan jadwal minggu depan, maka kita pakai Tenses
Simple present.
 The plane departs at 7.30 tomorrow morning.
Pesawat akan mendarat Besok pagi pagi pukul 7.30. Dalam
hal ini, walaupun kejadiannya besok,tapi kita pakai Simple
Present Tense karena sudah terjadwal pada pukul 07.30.
