10/13/2019 Iron and steel slag products : NIPPON SLAG ASSOCIATION

Manufacture and quality management of iron and steel slag products are carried out for a broad range
of applications. These products have cleared environmental standards, and the majority of them are
now provided to the market either as JIS (Japan Industrial Standard) equivalent products or as
designated procurement items under the Green Purchasing Law. As a result, iron and steel slag
products are fulfilling important functions as construction materials for roads, ports, airports, and other
infrastructure across Japan, and also as an environmental material for restoring or improving marine,
soil, and other environments.
As we now work toward resolving the problem of global warming, first steps have been taken to create
a low-carbon society, and there are growing demands for conserving resources, saving energy, and
reducing CO2 emissions. Here we will introduce some iron and steel slag products that can help to meet
these demands by applying their superior characteristics as environmental materials.

The area where demand is
largest for iron and steel slag
products is cement.
Approximately 60% of blast
furnace slag is used as a raw
material for this purpose.
Concrete aggregate
manufactured using iron and
steel slag as a raw material
include blast furnace slag
aggregate and electric arc
furnace oxidizing slag aggregate.
Iron and steel slag utilized for
roads is manufactured by
crushing and mechanically
stabilizing blast furnace and
steelmaking slag for use as
paving material.

Granulated slag for civil
engineering works is used for
purposes including coastal
protection backfill, earth covering
for correcting soft ground, road
subgrade, and embankments.
Compared with the use of natural
sand, the use of iron and steel
slag for ground improvement can
reduce the cost of ground
preparation for construction and
other uses.
Because blast furnace slag
includes fertilizer components
CaO, SiO2, and MgO, it is used in
rice cultivation as a calcium
silicate fertilizer.

To make rock wool used as

thermal insulation, molten slag is
formed into fibers, and then
processed into sheets or other
shapes.
