Comparing the three articles

in these three Articles authors want to know differences and effects between computer-based test
and pen, paper-based test. They worked on different areas of the same subject. In article one
author focuses on reading contexts in second language tests in both CBT and PPBT, the author
wants to find out impact of each of them on students. The authors focus on some aspects, i.e.,
computer familiarity, computer attitude, testing mode preference and test taking strategies on
students' performance on computer-based tests, and in comparison with paper-based tests. In
Article two which it is just a review article and the author focuses on the ways students should be
assessed, also the author wants to find out which test style is better for students, as the author
mention in the study the purpose of education system has been changed so the way of testing and
assessing should change as well. The author wants to find some evidence for motivation, anxiety
and students’ performance with different styles by reviewing some other researchers work. in
article three some other authors have another study to find out differences between paper-based
test and computer-based test, they want to focus on those reasons which affect students’
performance in their study.
Methodology and participants in this three article, for second article there is no methodology and
participants because the author just reviewed other researchers work and compare them to find
out difference between these two tests. But the other two articles collected their data in medical
schools in two different places with different participants, for first article the author collected
data from first-year medical students. 167 Saudi male and female students took part in this study.
57% of them were male and 43% were female. Participants had the same educational history
with respect to reading instruction and test taking. Yet, female students had not received formal
computer instruction in their academic curricula. This project was carried out at King Faisal
University, College of Medicine, Dammam, Saudi Arabia. For third article the authors got their
data from medical schools as well, an online survey was carried out on 213 final-year
undergraduates, in which they were asked to provide feedback on Paper 3 and MEQ papers.
Students were asked if they thought that the CBT format was preferable to the pen-and-paper
(PNP) format for Paper 3 and the MEQ, and why.

For article one the author used three different ways to collect his/her data, the author used both
quantitative and qualitative instruments were employed to reveal more valid and reliable results.
In this study used a triangulation perspective in data collection from students doing both paper
and computer-based reading tests in order to vary the sources of data required to answer the
research questions. But in third article the authors used just an online survey and asked the
student to give them feedback about that two kind of tests they have.

As I mentioned above article two doesn’t have methodology but the authors talked about some
other articles result and he/she put them in two different parts in part one the author wants to find
out each kind of tests effect on students, and as he/she mentions it depends on the test and its
requirement, as he/she said for some kind of test computer based test is better and for some
others paper based is better, but the author talks about one point which is time limitation, he/she
says because of time limitation sometimes students anxiety would be high, for solving this
problem computer-based test can be longer or no time limitation for them. And in part two the
author talks about effect of each kind of test on students, also it depends on the kind of test they
take.
In their conclusion they have mentioned some point, article one shows that testing mode has no
significant effect on the overall validity and reliability of the tests. But article two and article
three show different result and they think computer based test is better, in article two the author
says we can conclude that the difference of testing style in different situation has different
conclusions and aspects. As the goals in testing have been changed, the styles should be changed
to get better results. Also in article three authors say participants successfully conducted using an
online computer-based testing system such as the IVLE, also they say Our experience and
positive student feedback should encourage other universities to adopt CBT for high-stakes
examinations. In article one the author shows result for another point and says we can assert that
the construct of computer familiarity has no influence on students’ performance on computer-
based tests. The author has another point which related to article two and three and says the other
moderators such as computer attitude and testing mode preference do not have any critical
impact on the overall students’ performance on computer-based tests.
