and it is also known as the oldest existing university in Asia. also, it is the largest
catholic university in the world in terms of student population. It is designed by a
Spanish priest-civil engineer Rev. Fr. Roque Ruaño in 1920 to 1923, the main
building of the Philippine’s oldest university, located along Espana Boulevard, is

tuned after the lessons learned from the Great Kantō earthquake that flattened
Tokyo and Yokohama in September 1, 1923.
The school granted 3 titles formally called The Royal and Pontifical
University of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines. The term
royal was granted by King Charles III in 1785 after recognizing its role in the British
invasion of Manila from 1762-1764. The term Pontifical came from Pope Leo XIII
in 1902, making it the second university in the world to have such status (after
Gregorian University). As a pontifical university, it was established or directly
approved by the Holy See. It offers ecclesiastical degrees which are prerequisites
for bishop candidates. Its Catholic title was granted by Pope Pius XII in 1947.

Manila Cathedral Church
Site Analysis:
The Cathedral was initially built as a simple parish in Manila in 1571 by Juan
de Vivero, a secular priest, and was dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate
Conception. Back then, it was simply made of nipa and bamboo. On December 21,
1581, its status was elevated to a cathedral by Bishop Domingo Salazar. The
promotion happened two years after Pope Gregory established the Diocese of
Manila, which was put under the supervision of the Archbishop of Mexico. The
bishop reconstructed it from wood, nipa and bamboo. It has been the seat of the
Catholic Church in Manila since Pope Clement VIII elevated the Diocese of Manila
to a Metropolitan Archdiocese on August 14, 1595. During St John Paul II’s visit in
February 1981, he told then Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin that his wish
was for the Manila Cathedral to be a Basilica. And just months after, on April 27,
indeed it earned the title of Minor Basilica. From 1581 to 1958, Manila Cathedral
was reconstructed several times due to destruction caused by war, fires, typhoons
and earthquakes.
In 2012, the Basilica was closed under the orders of Archbishop Gaudencio
Cardinal Rosales for another major repair. The renovation, which was completed
in 2014, upgraded facilities with LED lighting, sound systems which are digitally
operated, and a structural foundation which are carbon-retrofitted. Manila
Cathedral also holds religious artworks and sacred relics of popes and saints, and
serves as resting place for the remains of former archbishops in Manila.
Manila City Hall
Site Analysis:
The Manila City Hall is one of the key government buildings constructed in
American Manila. It was designed by architect Antonio Toledo and was built in
1939. The city hall is adorned by a hexagonal tower with three clocks on three of
its facets. After its completion, the building received negative reviews for its lack
of aesthetics, lack of entrances and how the clock tower was placed. Sadly, the
City Hall was not spared from the ravages of war. During the Battle of Manila, the
city hall was heavily damaged from shelling.
After the war, the city hall was rebuilt through the War Reparations
program of the United States and was criticized due to the shape of its floor plan
which looked like a coffin or a shield of the Knights Templar. According to urban
legends, it was made to look like a coffin to pay homage to those who died during
the Battle of Manila.
City halls is one of the major components of a city. It served as the guide
hall of the city, because all the information that we need in a particular place or
city was there. This also used to promote and enhance the quality of life of the
community. That’s why it is the major a part of a city. And its located near at the
park or at the center of the city to be accessible for all.
