Lesson 1: Philippine Relics and Artifacts
Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of lines, shapes, and space; and the
principles of rhythm and balance through drawing of archeological artifacts, houses, buildings,
and churches from historical periods using crosshatching technique to simulate 3- dimensional
and geometric effects of an artwork.
Performance Standards: The learner creates different artifacts and architectural buildings in the
Philippines and in the locality using crosshatching technique, geometric shapes, and space, with
rhythm and balance as principles of design. puts up an exhibit on Philippine artifacts and houses
from different historical periods (miniature or replica).
Most Essential Learning Competency: Discusses events, practices, and culture influenced by
colonizers who have come to our country by way of trading.
Designs an illusion of depth/distance to simulate a3-dimensional effect by using crosshatching
and shading techniques in drawings (old pottery, boats, jars, musical instruments).

Artifacts refers to things created


by people for practical purposes. This can be a weapon, an ornament, or tool of historical or
cultural significance.
These objects give us a glimpse of how our ancestor have lived in the past. They reveal
important characteristics that help us piece together our history, heritage, and culture.
Prehistoric relics and artifacts provide us evidences of our civilization and these are the
following:
Manunggul Jar
The Manunggol Jar was one of the jars discovered in a cave
believes to be a burial site. It represents the belief of early filipinos in
life after death. The Manunggul Jar was declared a national Treasure
and can be seen printed on the old 1,000 Philippine peso bill.

Laguna Copperplate Inscription


It is the oldest written documentation found in the Philippines,
which according to the inscription on it was from the Saka Era
822(April 21,900 CE)

Maitum Anthropomorphic Potteries


These are secondary burial jars from Pino, Maitum,
Saranggani Province in Mindanao, and its existence dates back to the
Metal Age.

Angono Petroglyphs
These are 127 images carved into a wall of rock, estimated to
date back to 3,000 BC. They are located along the boundaries of
Angono and Binangonan, Rizal.

Lal’lo Shell Middens


This Neolithic shell mound site is located along the banks of the
Cagayan River dated ca. 100 AD.
Butuan Paleograph
Also known as the Butuan Silver Strip this piece of metal
with inscrptions was found in Butuan province. The inscriptions
found in it were found to be similar to a Javanese script that
exixted from yhr 21th to the 13th century.
Calatagan Pot
This is considered a national cultural treasure that dates back
to the 14th and 16th centuries. It is considered to be the first Spanish
colonization artifact. Traces of indigenous writing can be seen around
the mouth of the pot.

Butuan Ivory Seal


This is an Ivory stamp seal that was found in libertad, Butuan
City, Agusan del Norte, in the 9th to 12th century.

Balangay
Also known as Butuan Boats these are the first wooden
watercrafts which have been excavated in Southeast Asia, Nine
balangays have been recorded to exist and these boats have been
excavated dating back to 320 AD, 990 AD, And 1250 AD.
