A1. The average size of a farm in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, is 191 acres. The average
size of a farm in Greene County, Pennsylvania, is 199 acres. Assume the data were
obtained from two samples with standard deviations of 38 and 12 acres, respectively,
and sample sizes of 8 and 10, respectively. Can it be concluded at α = 0.05 that the
average size of the farms in the two counties is different? Assume the populations are
normally distributed.

A2. A dietitian wishes to see if a persons cholesterol level will change if the diet is sup-
plemented by a certain mineral. Six subjects were pretested, and then they took the
mineral supplement for a 6-week period. The results are shown in the table. (Choles-
terol level is measured in milligrams per deciliter.)

(a) Can it be concluded that the cholesterol level has been changed at α = 0.10?
Assume the variable is approximately normally distributed.

A3. As an aid for improving students study habits, nine students were randomly selected to
attend a seminar on the importance of education in life. The table shows the number
of hours each student studied per week before and after the seminar. At α = 0.10, did
attending the seminar increase the number of hours the students studied per week?

Before 9 12 15 3 18 10 13 7
After 9 17 20 2 21 15 22 6

A4. In a sample of 200 workers, 45 % said that they missed work because of personal illness.
Ten years ago in a sample of 200 workers, 35 % said that they missed work because of
personal illness.

(a) At α = 0.01, is there a difference in the proportion?

(b) Find the 95 % confidence interval for the difference of proportions

A5. The Miami County commissioners feel that a higher percentage of women work there
than in neighboring Greene County. To test this, they randomly select 1000 women in
each county and find that in Miami, 622 women work and in Greene, 594 work. Using
α = 0.05, do you think the Miami County commissioners are correct?

B 29.0 3.9
C 20.8 2.1
D 19.1 2.8
E 13.4 1.4
