Pre/Post Tests for HPP

Pre-test

● Has anyone seen a registered dietitian before?

○ If so:
■ In what setting?
■ Were you referred, or did you seek one out?
○ If not:
■ Why not?
■ Would you (if given the opportunity)?
● Have you ever taken a screening survey for malnutrition?
○ What did that look like?
○ How did you feel about the results?

The pretest was delivered in the form of an open discussion. The goal of this pretest for

me was to build rapport, help the participants feel more comfortable sharing their stories /

questions with me, to gauge their current knowledge and opinions on registered dietitians and

nutrition in general, and to see if any of them participated in a malnutrition screening.

The results of this pretest were that only two out of seven participants saw a registered

dietitian before and none of the participants knew what the difference between a registered

dietitian and a nutritionist was. They all expressed to me that they would love to see an RD if

given the opportunity and they all thought they could benefit from a discussion with one. Not

one person participated in a malnutrition screening and were also unaware of what it even was.

This information was extremely useful in determining on the spot, what I needed to focus more

on with this group; which was malnutrition in cancer patients in a hospital setting. I briefly

described what a malnutrition screening was and then forwarded examples of malnutrition

screenings to them via email after the presentation for their benefit. The pretest questions were

an excellent way for me to further evaluate what the needs of my population were during the
presentation so that I could adjust my discussion topics accordingly.

Post-test

1. Were you able to calculate your calorie needs? (yes or no)

2. List one reason why consuming enough calories is important.
3. Were you able to calculate your own protein needs? (yes or no)
4. List one reason why meal frequency is important.
5. What is one way you can increase your strength?
6. Did you find this presentation helpful? (yes or no)

This post test was delivered during the presentation and participants were given the

option to do it in the form of a discussion or enter their answers in the chat box for me to view

and keep the script of. Five out of seven participants completed it and their answers were very

useful to me for determining the effectiveness of my presentation.

The results of the posttest showed that everyone who participated was able to calculate

their own energy and protein needs, list ways to increase their strength and why it is important,

and express that my presentation was beneficial to them. This informs me that my presentation

was useful to many people and my teaching skills are adequate enough so that others learned a

lot from my discussion. I wanted to ensure that the information posted on the slides and the

calculations I had the participants do were not too complicated, considering I had no idea what

the age range of the population was prior to delivering my presentation. My SMOG analysis

ensured that the readability was at an 8th grade level and the participants also had everything

read to them by me so that they did not have to read; I also walked them through the equations
step by step to avoid confusion and I also omitted unnecessary equations like BMI that could be

found in a chart. The script of the chat is listed below.
