TENSES AND AUXILIARY VERBS - PRACTICE September 28, 2020

- There are three classes of verbs in English:

1) Auxiliary verbs (do, be and have)


2) Modal auxiliary verbs (must, can, should, might, will, would...)
3) Full verbs (other verbs in language, for example, play, run, help, write...)

- Do, be and have can also be used as a full verbs with their own meanings.

I do my washing on Saturdays.
We were at home yesterday
They have three children.

- be + verb + -ing is used to make continuous verb forms.


He is / was / has been revising English grammar.

- be + past participle is used to form the Passive.


My car is / was / has been stolen.

- have + past participle is used to make perfect verb forms.


He has worked / has been working / had worked in that building.

- To make a negative, add not or n't to the auxiliary verb.

He is working. He isn't working.


I was thinking. I wasn't thinking.
She works in the bank. She doesn't work in the bank.

- To make a question, invert the subject and the auxiliary verb. If there is no auxiliary verb,
use do/does/did.

She is wearing jeans. Is she wearing jeans?


You were born here. Were you born here?
He has been to China. Has he been to China?
I know you. Do I know you?
He wants ice-cream. Does he want ice-cream?
They went out. Did they go out?
