This checklist will help teachers and school leaders to draft a plan for communicating with and
supporting students as they begin radio-based instruction. Note that there is space left after
every checklist item for teachers and school leaders to add their own questions and thoughts.
What method of communication will be the most consistent and accessible for students
and their families?
Will you need to use more than one communication method to reach all students?
Can you send messages directly to all of your students, or will you need to send messages
to someone in the community who can pass on messages to students and families?
How will students and families connect with teachers and the school if they have
questions?
How will you let families and students know the communication methods and
expectations?
Prioritize Connection
How can teachers and schools connect with students on a personal level to offer support
and encouragement (handwritten notes to students, a SMS message of a note, Facebook
or WhatsApp group messages, etc.)?
Research shows that students are more engaged when learning methods “layered” and
they are able to connect in multiple ways. How can your school “layer” strategies to build
engagement?
How can students stay connected to the school community and to their peers?
Are there activities and/or communication tools that will allow students to work and
connect with their peers?
What will be the easiest way for students to submit assignments: paper-packet drop-off,
email, taking a photo and sending through SMS or uploading to Facebook, etc.? How will
the school reduce contact to keep students and families safe?
How will feedback be given on completed assignments: sent through email, taking a
pictures and sending through SMS, included in paper-packet pick up, etc.)?
Can a system be set up to periodically check-in with students and families to give
feedback on overall progress over the phone or in socially-distanced visits?
Are there ways to promote peer feedback amongst students via Facebook, WhatsApp, or
SMS messages?
Which students are going to struggle the most with remote learning? How can schools
reach and support them?
Are there resources and/or materials that the school can provide to support vulnerable
students?
How can teachers and schools connect with the parents and guardians of vulnerable
students?
