DISCUSSION/SUMMARY

As God’s beloved children, we are seekers of His Divine Beauty and it is faith which connects us
with the Triune God revealed through Jesus Christ. Through Christ’s witness to His Father in His
preaching, teaching, miracles and most poignantly in His Passion, Death and Resurrection, we come to
believe in the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Our faith as Catholics, therefore, consists in our personal
conviction and belief in God our Father, revealed by Jesus Christ, His only Begotten Son, and their
presence to us through the Holy Spirit in the Church.

Scripture Text Ephesians 1: 3 – 8, 13 – 14 Spiritual Blessings in Christ

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual
blessing in the heavenly places, 4 just as he chose us in Christ [a] before the foundation of the world to be
holy and blameless before him in love. 5 He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ,
according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on
us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses,
according to the riches of his grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9 he has made
known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10 as a plan
for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 13 In him you
also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were
marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this[a] is the pledge of our inheritance toward
redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

The Triune God: One in Unity

Theology (theologia in Latin) refers to the inmost life of God in the Trinity; a mystery which cannot be
understood by reason alone, but by faith as revealed by God Himself. Without God’s revelation, it is not
possible for anyone to know the mystery of God’s unity in the Three Divine Persons. Economy
(oikonomia in Greek) refers to God’s revelation of Himself in His works; God the Father, Son, and Spirit
communicates about His life through all His works in the history of humankind.

The Holy Trinity

Every Christian is marked with the Holy Trinity, as in Baptism the rite says, “I baptize you in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” the sign which each one invokes before every prayer
offered to the One God. The Holy Trinity is the center, source, and foundation of all mysteries. There are
three persons in one true God and the Catholic Church has the mission to continue the proclamation of the
revelation of the Trinity. In Jesus, the highest salvation and justification was willed by the Father and the
Spirit. The Trinity was not accessible to human understanding before the Word became Flesh and before
the indwelling of the Spirit.

The mystery of faith is that there are three persons in one true God that God Himself revealed in His
work of creation and revelation in Scriptures. The economy of salvation is thus illustrated through
following:

1. The Father is revealed by the Son - Jesus Himself revealed to His apostles that God is Father
not only the Creator, but in Jesus’ ministerial works and miracles attest to His relation with His
Father – reciprocal and affirming His sonship as the image of the invisible God (cf. John 14: 7 –
13). The Catholic Church in its Council and Magisterium proclaim that Jesus is the Word of God,
Son of God, one with the Father and the Spirit, consubstantial with the Father.

2. The Father and the Son are revealed by the Spirit - Jesus promised to His apostles that He will
send the Holy Spirit as an advocate, one to guide them when Jesus would return to the Father; He
who will reveal and glorify the mystery of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit is God who has the
same substance and nature with the Father and Son, whom Jesus announced before His Passover
as Paraclete (Advocate), and who continuously teaches, guides, inspires, through the ages,
continues to surround the Church with His many gifts. The life of a believer is a life in
communion with the Trinity, a unique relationship established without dividing the Triune God.
The perfect unity of the Divine Trinity is the destiny of the Christian called forth to share God’s
eternal truths on earth and God’s eternal glory in heaven. The love of the Trinity for all of
humanity is manifested in the economy of salvation. In the Spirit, God the Father gathered
humanity to form family in His Son, Jesus Christ. The Church continues this mission of the
Trinity in her service of charity in today’s broken world.

The Church – instituted by Christ Jesus

It was the Son’s task to accomplish the Father’s plan of salvation in the fullness of time. Its
accomplishment was the reason for His being sent. The Lord Jesus inaugurated His Church by preaching
the Good News that is the coming of the reign of God, promised over the ages in the Scriptures.” To
fulfill the Father’s will, Christ ushered in the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. The Church “is the Reign of
Christ already present in mystery” (CCC 763).

The Church – Revealed by the Holy Spirit

“When the work which the Father gave the Son was accomplished, the Holy Spirit was sent on
the day of Pentecost in order that they might continually sanctify the Church.” Then, the Church was
openly displayed to the crowds and the spread of the Gospel among the nations, through preaching, was
begun.” As the convocation of all men for salvation, the Church in her very nature is missionary, sent by
Christ to all nations to make disciples of them. (CCC 767)

The family is the Church in the home. Jesus began His earthly mission within a family; the family is
where faith life begins, is nurtured, and grows to maturity. It I where Christian conscience is formed, the
Christian prayer of worship - nurtured and integrated. In fact, the family is a true foundation of Basic
Ecclesial Communities… a model of relationships in the Church. Is the household of God where all call
upon and obey the will of the same Father, through the Holy Spirit (CFC 1375). The family is a
community of life and love; and this is a living reflection of and a real sharing in God’s love for humanity
and the love of Christ the Lord of the Church (CFC 17)

DISCUSSION/SUMMARY:
Scripture Text: Genesis 22: 1 -3, 9 18 The Command to Sacrifice Isaac

22 After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He
said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him
there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the
morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood
for the burnt offering, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God had shown him. 4 On the
third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay
here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come back to
you.” 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried
the fire and the knife. So, the two of them walked on together. 7 Isaac said to his father Abraham,
“Father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the
lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my
son.” So, the two of them walked on together.

When they came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in
order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out
his hand and took the knife to kill [a] his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, and
said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do
anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son,
from me.” 13 And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and
took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.  14 So Abraham called that place
“The LORD will provide”;[b] as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”[c]
15
The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16 and said, “By myself I have
sworn, says the LORD: Because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I
will indeed bless you, and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand
that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies, 18 and by your offspring
shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing for them, because you have obeyed my voice.”

The obedience of faith is the human response to the invisible God in a way wherein ones intellect, will
and whole being is submitted to God’s disposition. In the Scripture the example of perfect obedience is
the Patriarch Abraham. He was someone who heard God’s voice and listened in faith, and in utmost
freedom gave his “yes” to God’s instructions. To him God was the assurance of truth. Abraham became
the father of all who believe. Abraham did not fail to heard God’s instruction for him to go to a promised
land even though he was a stranger to it

Believing in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

To believe in God is to have a personal adherence and entrusting oneself wholly to God and believing the
whole truth in what God has revealed. Jesus as the Beloved son of God, and the Word made flesh
dwelling amongst his people, has revealed the true face of the Father for He was with the Father from the
beginning of time. To believe in the Holy Spirit means to accept him as co-equal with God – He is God
who completely comprehends the thoughts and depth of God. He causes the faith of humanity in the
revealed Son of God

1. Faith: An Acts of Believing – Faith is the kind of knowledge and deep acknowledgment that Jesus
Christ is Lord, that He is God as revealed in Scriptures and in man’s conscience. Faith is not only
in the knowledge obtained by the mind, but it is having the conviction to believe, accept and
follow Jesus.

2. Faith: An Act of Doing – this refers to the faith of one who believes giving him or her the resolve
to do and act upon the will of God through loving service to the poor, thus, becoming a witness
of Jesus servanthood.

3. Faith: Entrusting and worshipping it is the total surrender to the will of God, like Abraham who
did not put any reservation to obey the command of God to go to a land unknown to him. It is the
kind of faith that trusts, loves, and hopes from the heart.

4. Faith and prayer as an encounter with Christ the call to holiness in life and the call to eternal life
have been revealed to us in Jesus; by the words of the Scriptures we have been made shares in the
truth about God. The proper response to this proclamation is faith. The intellect and the will
cannot but assent to the truths of divine and human laws; the mind and heart are thus opened by
the light given by the Holy Spirit and are infused with the faith and reason. The encounter with
the person in Jesus happens in the conscience of man, in the revealed truths of the Scriptures, and
in the life of the Church, the guardian of the deposits of faith.

Abraham’ Faith

1. It is important to note that the God who spoke to Abraham was not one of the gods, he had
his family had worship in Ur and Harran. Although God promised material rewards to
Abraham, His ultimate promise was an offer of salvation to the patriarch and a promise of
salvation to all people through Abraham and he said “In you all nations shall be blessed.”
Salvation was expressed in terms of the well- being a chosen nomadic shepherd desired. A
shepherd of Abraham’s time hoped for an expansion of his wealth and immortality through
many descendants who would bear his name.

God taught Abraham to appreciate the salvation He offered. Salvation wads both a spiritual gift
and a task that called for Abraham’s cooperation. We too, experience faith as a gift and a task. It
is a gift from God, but we also need to do something to receive, nourish, and nurture it. Why did
God reach out to Abraham and command him to go through a difficult physical and spiritual
journey? God’s call to Abraham to move from Ur to Canaan began the formation of the people
with whom God had chosen to form a covenant. From these people would come the Messiah,
Jesus Christ, who would liberate all people from sin. This was Abrahams’s part in God’s plan. He
would be a model of obedience and faith, and a means to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.

2. Abraham responds with faith. God called Abraham to be a part of His divine plan of
salvation. What exactly was Abraham’s task or mission? He was to act as God directed him.
He was to trust God and His promises. He must obey the promptings of the divine will and
believe in God wholeheartedly.

3. God establish a covenant with Abraham – a covenant is an offer of friendship and mutual
commitment. It is God’s consistent way of relating with individuals and communities
throughout salvation history.

4. Abraham prepared for the journey to the land of Moriah. He and his son Isaac gathered
wood and traveled to where the sacrifice would take place. Isaac was unaware of or confused
about God’s command to his father.

Faith in Jesus

Pope Francis prayer in his encyclical letter (Lumen Fidei), wrote about the importance of Christ as the
light of our faith, a faith yet to be recovered and centered in Jesus Christ. Saint Augustine’s thoughts
allude to the patriarch Abraham who was the father of faith in the Old Testament, and who was saved by
his faith. Augustine alludes not to Christ of the present but the Promised Messiah or future Christ. The
fullness of Christian faith is fulfilled in the New Testament in which Jesus the Lord lived among us and
who God resurrected from death. The promise of the Old Testament became real in the New Testament in
which God’s supreme intervention, manifestation, and dialogue with man in Jesus was not only in simple
or ordinary world but by but the eternal word of God’s greatest love – God spoke to us in His Son. God
love is powerful and tangible, acting in the human history and revealed fully in the life and death of Jesus.
The perfect love of God has its culmination in Christ’s crucifixion, in Jesus dying for all with a love that
brings man’s salvation. The fullness of life and faith relationship is fully revealed and encountered in
Christ’s passion death and resurrection.

Salvation by Faith

For St. Paul those who believe and accept the gift of faith become a new creation, the children of God,
and can call God the Father “Abba.” He pointed to the Pharisees that faith is attained from the goodness
of God which must be accompanied with good works. We can be saved by faith when we recognize that
grace is the gift of God to human beings however undeserving a person is, so that one can be transformed;
by the salvation experienced, the person bears good fruit for the Kingdom. Faith in Christ an save us if we
center our life in Him because God through Christ, gives us this great radical transforming gift, a grace
that enables the Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Those who believe with the transforming love of Jesus
in their hearts and with the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit become open, more aware, more dispose
to see, hear see, and conform to Jesus. It is through the eyes of Jesus that we view the world, in His love
and His vision alive in us through the Spirit

Ecclesial Faith

All believers of Christ become part and member of His body and this essential relationship is called union
with Christ in the Church. The service of others is grounded on the faith in Crist to bring others to His
Church. Ecclesial faith is very necessary to have a solid faith in Christ. Through it the baptized adheres to
a concrete unity in the Church before the proclamation of faith in Christ to others. A preacher rooted in
Christ can proclaim him in words and deeds with love, which makes the heart of others to be attracted to
Him and join in the great pilgrimage of the Church.

EVALUATION: Essay
Abraham was willing to offer his only son to God to prove his faith to Him. As a student and as a
baptized Christian, what are you willing to offer to God? How will you do it?
