ANALYSIS

What creation stories do you know of? Summarize what you have remembered and write
it on the space below.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Then began the seven most creative days
of all time as God spoke life into existence. First day, God created light and separated the light
from the darkness, calling light “day” and darkness “night.” Second day is an expanse to separate
the waters and called it “sky.” Third day, dry ground called as the sun, moon, and the stars to
give light to the earth and to govern and separate the day and the night. These would also serve
as signs to mark seasons, days also serve as signs to mark seasons, days, and years. Fifth day, the
living creature of the seas and every winged bird, blessing them to multiply and fill the waters
and the sky with life. Sixth day, God created the animals and man and woman who is Adam and
Eve. And God blessed and gave them the whole earth to care and rule by them. And on the
seventh and last day, God had finished his work of creation and so he rested on the seventh day,
blessing it and making it holy.
APPLICATION

Answer the questions below in 3-5 sentences only.

1. In the story How the World was Made, different characters were introduced which
symbolize how the Mindanawons live their life and value what they have. How is the
story affecting in the aspect of spirituality of the modern citizens of Mindanao?

In times right now the story might not affect in the aspect of spirituality, for it lacks in construct
and is biased and not universal and Philippines has a diversity of religions. Maybe, some people
like our “katutubo” might still worshipping on that belief. Yet hundreds of years passed to many
people where different kinds of belief was intertwined, and I believe “Faith” itself will be the one
that brings and can affect the aspect of spirituality, that if someone was drawn to that religious or
cultural belief they will be affected in their aspect of spirituality.

2. In the line “Pandaguan did not die. After lying on the ground for thirty days he regained
his strength, but his body was blackened from the lightning, and all his descendants ever
since that day have been black. His first son, Arion, was taken north, but as he had been
born before his father’s punishment, he did not lose his color, and all his people therefore
are white. Libo and Saman were carried south, where the hot sun scorched their bodies
and caused all their descendants to be of a brown color. A son of Saman and a daughter
of Sicalac were carried east, where the land at first was so lacking in food that they were
compelled to eat clay. On this account their children and their children’s children have
always been yellow in color”, how did it portray the differences of culture of the whites,
the Blacks, the Yellows, and the other races?

It portrays a bias and a sensitive labeling in physical differences. In the races of black people, it
might turn out to a racism, for that the belief that they are black is because of getting struck of a
lightning. While being white is pure that is why they did not lose their color, and to other colors
the used of colors to determine its origin is generally inappropriate that makes a biased belief.
Whatever the color we might have, we must not use colors to refer to other human groups.
3. In The Children of the Limokon, why do the Mandayans consider the limokon as their
ancestor?

They considered the “limokon” as their ancestors it is when in the ancient times when one
“limokon” laid two eggs, one at the mouth of the Mayo River and one farther up its course where
the eggs was hatched and the one at the mouth of the river became a man and the other one was a
woman.

4. For the Bagobos in the story Origin, what is/are considered the most important thing/s to
have?

The most important thing to consider in the story is water and food. How they unite in order to
continue their lives and being hopeful. They are finding a place where they could settle and have
supplies to their needs. The eagerness of people to live and finding different ways on how they
will survive their living.

5. What similarities do the stories have?

It is about the origin of each tribe name, places and their cultures. The variety of stories tell about
what are their histories and how people lived their lives. The stories share us about the origin
which is we must appreciate and respect.

6. After reading all of them, what can you say about Mindanao’s culture as reflected in the
stories?

The Mindanao's has a very wondrous stories about creation. Mostly, Mindanawons are
customary in having different stories about origin. They tend to share what is the history of their
place, how they end up being called into who they are, and how did their cultures begin. The
Mindanawons beliefs still remembered and even in this generation we tend to still believe in
those stories and reflects to what we are now and how we live.
CLOSURE

Mainstream media has done efforts in telling the stories of Mindanao. Brilliante
Mendoza’s film Mindanao and ABS-CBN’s A Soldier’s Heart are samples of their work. How
about you, as Mindanawon, how would you encourage Mindanawons to appreciate what we have
especially with our culture?

As a Mindanawon I will encourage everybody to set some values in knowing the culture of every
ethnic tribes. How Mindanao was been so abundant in culture where it helps to developed our
rich lands and verdant hills and mountains. We are peculiar in terms of how the variety of origin
stories are still existing and we continue in believing those which we know that it imparted a lot
to our lives. We must not be ashamed of what we are and our unique culture because this make
us different to others.
