Arlamol™ LST

PPG-3 Isostearyl Methyl Ether

Light, Silky Touch

Choosing the right emollient is an important, finishing step in creating your formulation aesthetics. For anhydrous
products such as colour cosmetics, the emollient choice is even more important in determining the overall skin-feel.
Croda has developed a new ether technology, Arlamol LST, with a high degree of skin spreading that creates an
exceptionally light feel on the skin. This super fluid has a very low viscosity and freeze point, and its ether chemistry
gives it broad pH tolerance and compatibility with actives for overall formulation versatility.

Features & Benefits

 Excellent skin spreading
 Extreme pH tolerance
 Lessens whitening effect of antiperspirant salts
 Improves emulsion aesthetics
 Reduces tackiness
 High % natural content

Applications
 Anti-acne products
 Antiperspirant/deodorants
 Skin care: creams, lotions, serums, gels and oils
 Hair care: conditioners, treatments and oils
 Colour cosmetics
 Sunscreens
 Self-tanners
 Hair colour

The ether-based chemistry of Arlamol LST is essential to making this a “super fluid” with exceptional sensory
properties. By developing an ether, rather than an ester, the resulting product has a lower viscosity, lower polarity
and lower freeze point than the corresponding ester. The lower viscosity creates an emollient that moves more quickly
over the skin, and the lower freeze point helps with formulation stability. The chemical structure of Arlamol LST is
shown in Figure 1 on the following page.

* Arlamol LST and its use in personal care applications are patent pending.

Skin Migration
The degree to which an emollient spreads on the skin is important in determining how it will feel on the skin as a neat
material, as well as in formulation. Croda’s Skin Migration test is therefore an important sensory assessment for
emollients. It is generally known that there is an inverse relationship between the viscosity of an emollient and its skin
migration value. Arlamol LST has a very low kinematic viscosity (16.76 cSt) and was found to have a medium-high
skin migration value of 1205 mm2. ). For a full list of Croda emollients and their skin migration values, please see our
“Emollients: Your Essential Selection Guide”.

pH Tolerance
A key benefit to formulating with any ether is the hydrolytic stability which allows for formulating with low or high pH
actives such as salicylic acid in acne treatments or DHA in self-tanning products. The hydrolytic stability of Arlamol
LST allows it to be incorporated into systems ranging from around pH 2-12.

Tack Reduction
High spreading emollients can often act as detackifiers in a variety of formulations. To assess whether Arlamol LST
would help with reducing tack in formulation, we first evaluated its performance at 20% in petrolatum compared to
100% petrolatum. A small sample of each was placed on a black glass plate in a 1 inch diameter circle. A cotton ball
was then pressed into each sample at the same pressure and removed, leaving cotton fibers behind. The ability of
Arlamol LST to reduce tackiness is measured by how much adhesion we see of the cotton ball to the test sample.
Figure 2 shows the results of the cotton ball test.

Arlamol LST Reduces the Tackiness of Petrolatum

Figure 2: Cotton ball test: 100% Petrolatum (left) and 80/20% Petrolatum/Arlamol LST (right)

As seen in Figure 2, when Arlamol LST is added to pure petrolatum the amount of cotton ball that sticks to the
sample is significantly reduced.

In addition, a panel study was conducted on an emulsion to see if the reduction of tackiness could be perceived by an
average consumer. A formulation, “Simple Lotion”, with 5% Arlamol LST was compared to the same formulation
without Arlamol LST as seen below. Twenty two panellists evaluated the formulations on the forearm, applying the
same amount and rubbing it in simultaneously to determine which one they thought was stickier to the touch. The
panellists were instructed to pay close attention to the different phases (initial feel, dry down, completely dry) when
working in the sample. In order to reduce variation, the phases were to be considered and then the sample assessed
overall for tackiness. A majority of the panellists chose the formulation with Arlamol LST to be less tacky (16 out of
22).

Pigment Wetting
In colour cosmetic development, the emollient phase, in addition to enhancing the product aesthetics, must also “wet”
or disperse the pigment blend. Pigments are insoluble colourants that are usually granular in consistency and very
prone to agglomerating. To be used effectively in formulations, cosmetic pigments must be “wet” and dispersed into a
vehicle, usually a liquid emollient. The ideal pigment wetting agent is one that binds strongly to the pigment and
forms low viscosity dispersions of small particle size. The lower the viscosity of the pigment grind, the better the
pigment wetting agent’s ability to spread over the pigments and to displace air around the pigments. An effective
pigment grind allows for a higher pigment concentration and provides a smooth application of colour on the skin.
Hence, pigment suspension viscosity is often measured and used as a means of evaluating the relative wetting
efficiency of an emollient.

Arlamol LST was evaluated as a pigment wetting agent against Cromollient™ DP3A and Liquiwax™ DICDD, two
emollients commonly used to disperse pigments, as well as Crodamol SFX, another high spreading, light feeling
ester. A pigment grind for each was created using 65% emollient and 35% D&C Red #7 Calcium Lake (C19-011, Sun
Chemical). A TiO2 grind was created using 60% emollient with 40% TiO2 powder (Hombitan AFDC 200, Sachtleben).
All dispersions were prepared with 30 mins of propeller mixing, followed by four runs through the three-roller mill on
progressively tighter settings. The viscosity of each grind was taken at 25°C using the Brookfield RVT viscometer.
The kinematic viscosity of each neat emollient was taken at 25°C as a comparison.

Arlamol LST is an excellent pigment wetting agent, outperforming Cromollient DP3A and Crodamol SFX. It also
has the highest skin migration value or ability to spread over the skin quickly, providing a lighter overall skin feel.
Liquiwax DICDD is the best pigment wetting agent tested but it has a lower skin migration value making it better
suited to lipsticks or applications where less migration is desirable.

Sunscreen Formulation
Arlamol LST is an excellent emollient to use in sunscreen formulation since its high skin migration creates a
pleasurable application and aids in creating an even film of product on the skin. This is particularly important in
inorganic sunscreen formulations where traditional TiO2 dispersions can be perceived as draggy on the skin. When
combined with Solaveil™ Sensation, a TiO2 dispersion which has an innovative silane coating, a sensational light
feeling inorganic sunscreen can be easily achieved (see SC-613 on page 6). Solubility and compatibility with organic
sunscreens is also important. Arlamol LST was found to be compatible with Octyl Salicylate, Benzophenone-3, and
Avobenzone. 5% of each organic sunscreen tested could be solubilized in Arlamol LST.

With the importance of UVA protection and achieving a critical wavelength of 370nm, the effect of Arlamol LST on
UVA absorbance was measured in comparison to Crodamol AB (C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate) for in vitro SPF and critical
wavelength in a simple organic sunscreen formulation. The Arlamol LST formulation performed on par to the
formulation with Crodamol AB with no difference in in vitro SPF or critical wavelength.

Solubility Profile
Arlamol LST is soluble in a variety of non-polar solvents and insoluble in polar solvents. When added to surfactants,
results were variable. The solution with SLS remained clear but lost viscosity, whereas the ALES solution remained
clear but became very viscous. With SLES, the solution was completely white and became very viscous.

Procedure
Combine Part A ingredients and homogenise at low speed, heating to 75°C. Avoid aeration. Pre-mill
pigments of Part B in Osteriser for 3x15 seconds at high speed, weighing out 10% extra to compensate for
loss. Slowly, add Part B while homogenising on low speed and cover beaker. Combine Part C ingredients,

Cool to 75-80°C. Combine Part D ingredients and mix to a slurry, add to mixture and homogenise until
uniform. Check beaker weight and add water to 20 grams over the theoretical weight for a 1-kilo batch.
Cover beaker and bring temperature back up to 77-80°C. Combine ingredients of Part E and heat
