Adinol

Sodium methyl acyl taurates

Adinols are a range of speciality anionic surfactants which reflect the growing market demand for pure, high-
performance multifunctional raw materials. Members based on two different fatty acid sources, coconut fatty
acids (Adinol CT) and oleic acid (Adinol OT), offer varying combinations of properties. Taurates are known to
possess excellent wetting, foaming, detergent and dispersing properties, and leave a soft, pleasant afterfeel on
the skin. Advances in Croda's production technology through research and development have enabled the
manufacture of high purity grades to minimise residual impurities. For Adinol CT95 this improves the taste,
colour and odour characteristics, making it an ideal speciality additive in oral care applications.

Personal care
As anionic surfactants the Adinols provide excellent detergency, wetting and foaming and are recommended
for premium detergent cleansing products. In facial cleansers, shower gels, foam baths and liquid soaps the
Adinols exhibit good foaming over a wide pH range, even in the presence of hard water. Their dispersing
properties ensure suspension of dirt particles and reduce re-deposition in formulated systems. Due to the
substantivity of the Adinols they impart a pleasant residual skin feel; Adinol OT offers a more perceptible
conditioning effect due to the oleoyl fatty chain.

The Adinols may be used as the primary or auxiliary detergent in high quality conditioning shampoos, where
they improve lather and leave hair feeling silky and manageable. Adinol CT is a particularly useful surfactant in
antidandruff shampoos, as studies have shown that sodium methyl cocoyl taurate can reduce both dandruff
formation and damage to hair cuticles due to its lower irritation potentiali. As a secondary surfactant typical
recommended usage levels are 2 – 5%, depending on the desired effect.

Oral care
Adinol CT functions as a surfactant and wetting agent in toothpastes and mouthwashes as it is non-toxic and
non-irritating to the oral mucosa. Additionally, substituted taurines are reported to reduce plaque formation by
inhibiting the initial adherence of bacteria to the dentin surfaces and inhibiting glucosyl transferase catalysis ii.

Fatty acid N-methyl taurine condensates are particularly recommended in hypersensitive toothpastes based on
strontium ions. The surface activity of the taurates promotes cleaning of the tooth enamel and enhances the
effectiveness of the water soluble strontium ions by promoting penetration into the tooth structureiii. Unlike
traditional anionic surfactants, such as sodium lauryl sulphate, taurates offer the additional advantage of neither
inactivating nor precipitating the strontium ions.2 Adinol CT is typically incorporated in oral care products at
levels of up to 3%.

Foaming
The foaming properties of 2% active Adinol CT95 have been evaluated over a range of pH levels at 40°C,
using the Ross-Miles foam test apparatus. The results, illustrated in figure 1, show that Adinol CT95 is able to
generate a high flash foam over a wide pH range.

Biodegradability
Adinol CT95 and Adinol OT64 are readily biodegradable as defined in Directive 93/21/EEC when tested in a
modified OECD screening test (OECD301E). The other members of the Adinol range are considered to be
readily biodegradable and would not be expected to persist indefinitely in the environment.

Health and safety

The Adinols are a range of sodium N-methyl N-acyl taurates; they possess relatively low degrees of acute oral
toxicity and, in common with other anionic surfactants, are expected to be irritating to skin and eyes at 100%
concentration but essentially non-irritating at in-use dilutions. Dust masks should be worn when handling the
powdered grades.
