This specification has been restructured both conceptually and graphically; the
general revision has been carried out in accordance with CEE requirements,
underlining the functional details and deleting the discriminatory elements.
In the normative references have been added: PED directive, in case it is
required for the project, and BS 6364 code for cryogenic valves.

2 FUNCTIONAL NORMATIVE REQUIREMENTS

2.1 Functional requirements

For each supply lot the following valves shall be subjected to cryogenic test:

• One valve of minimum size, for each type of valve and for each pressure
class;
• One valve of medium size, for each type of valve and for each pressure class;
• One valve of maximum size, for each type of valve and for each pressure
class.

Valves smaller than 2” size shall not be tested.

The valves to be tested and testing apparatus shall be clean, dry and oil free.

The valve ends shall be properly sealed (using flanges, plugs etc.) and a
connection shall be provided on both ends for inlet/outlet of the test fluid.
Additionally, a connection shall be provided on the outlet end for a “T” type
thermocouple to measure the temperature inside the valve.

2.2 Testing Apparatus

The testing apparatus shall be installed as shown in Appendix 2 (Fig. App 2.a,
Fig. App 2.b and Fig. App 2.c) and shall include:

a) “T” type thermocouple for low temperatures;

b) pressure gauge (sample, class 1.0 vfs, with full scale not exceeding twice the
maximum test pressure);
c) temperature indicator (sample, class 0.5 vfs);
d) valves;
e) rotameter/flow meter (duly sized) to measure leaks;
f) liquid nitrogen tank, for cooling;
g) pressurised gaseous helium cylinders for testing;
h) tubes and fittings;
i) vat/tub, of adequate size to contain the valve;
j) material for thermal insulation.

The material for pipes, fittings, flanges and valves shall be stainless steel.

2.3 Testing Procedure

The test shall be carried out according to the instructions given below; reference
shall be made to the test apparatus described under 2.2.

2.3.1 Requirements before cryogenic test

The valve to be tested shall be positioned with its stem in vertical position, and
the flow direction on the horizontal axis.

Before cooling, the valves shall be hydrotested (body and seats) in accordance
with API Std. 598 (Manual gate valves, globe valves, check valves, and butterfly
valves), API Spc. 6D (Manual ball valves) and ANSI/FCI 70-2 (Control valves)
with seal class as per individual specifications.

A pneumatic valve seat test shall be carried out in accordance with API Std. 598
(Manual gate and butterfly valves), API Spc. 6D (Manual ball valves) and
ANSI/FCI 70-2 (Control valves) with seal class as per individual specifications.

After successful test results, the valve shall be cleaned and thoroughly dried
under vacuum as per 2.1 above.

2.3.2 Tightness and operative tests

In the vat where liquid nitrogen will be admitted, valves shall be positioned semi-
open with the exception of ball valves with soft insert seats. These should be
positioned either fully open or fully closed.
The time required for reaching the test temperature shall be such as to avoid
thermal shocks.
The nitrogen level shall be kept constant at the top flange of the bonnet for the
whole duration of the tests.

During the whole staying in the vat, except for the time required for testing the
seats, the valve internal part shall be kept under helium pressure to avoid
nitrogen droplets inlet from the outside.

The test shall begin when the temperature inside the valve has lowered to the
minimum value obtainable (≤ -190°C) and kept constant for at least 30 minutes.

The tightness of the stuffing box shall be checked during the test, using a sniffer
to detect helium leaks. Watery solutions shall not be used. The acceptable
leakage shall be less than or equal to 5x10-4 std cm3 per second.

After the constant temperature period above, the On/Off valves (both manual and
actuated) shall be operated ten times into open and closed positions. All torque
values shall be recorded and shall be in accordance with the ones specified in
the following paragraph 2.3.4.

After said constant temperature period the Control valves shall be operated five
times.

After the operability check, the valve shall be closed and a seal test shall be
performed, using helium at a pressure of 6 bar to be maintained for 10 minutes
as a minimum.
For trunnion type ball valves, the tube which conveys helium leaks to the bubble-
counter and flow meter may be connected to the vent located at the top of the
valve body instead of being connected to the outlet flange.
Each seat shall be tested individually after depressurising the valve body and the
area downstream the other seat.

2.3.3 Acceptance criteria

The maximum allowable leakages at the internal test temperature shall be as

follows:

2.3.4 Requirements after the cryogenic test

During the heating operation, the valve shall be operated open/closed at 2 - 3

intervals until ambient temperature has been reached. All torque values shall be
recorded. Precautions shall be taken to prevent moisture from entering the valve.

For manually operated valves the maximum torque at the valve operating device
shall not exceed 343,23 Nm (35 kgm); in case this torque value is exceeded, the
valve shall be equipped with reduction gear even if this is not required by the
application standard.

The motorized valves shall be tested complete with the actuator. Torque values
shall not exceed 80% of the rated torque of the actuator.

The test shall not be carried out for control valves.

Upon completion of cryogenic tests, the valves shall be pneumatically re-tested

at ambient temperature as specified above.
The leaks recorded during this test shall not exceed the ones recorded before
valve cooling.

The Manufacturer shall provide copies of instrument calibration certificates to the

Purchaser’s Inspector.

2.4 Ergonomics

There are no ergonomic requirements applicable to the subject of this

specification.

2.5 Safety

There are no safety requirements applicable to the subject of this specification.

2.6 Requirements for Quality Management and Quality Assurance
