Test-1 (Open-Book)

Time: 30 Min. Date: September 12, 2020 (Saturday) Max. Marks: 30

1. Define events/random variables as and when required. Notations/symbols have their usual meaning.

2. Write your name and ID on each page of your answer sheet (white sheets).

3. While answering, use proper steps. Just writing the final answer will receive no credit.

4. The answer sheet must be scanned (in pdf) and uploaded by 10:45 AM.

1. Let X be a discrete random variable that assumes the values −2, −1, 0, 1 and 2. It is given that:
P (X = −2) = P (X = −1) = P (X = 1) = P (X = 2) and P (X < 0) = P (X = 0) = P (X > 0) = α.
(i) Determine the cdf of X. [5]
(ii) Compute the variance of X. [5]

2. Let Z be a standard normal random variable and Y = a + bZ + cZ 2 , where a, b, and c are real constants.
Compute variance of Y . [5]

3. A random sample of n = 15 light bulbs of a certain type yielded the following observations on lifetime
(in years): 2.0, 1.3, 6.0, 1.9, 5.1, 0.4, 1.0, 5.3, 15.7, 0.7, 4.8, 0.9, 12.2, 5.3, 0.6. Assuming that the lifetime
distribution is exponential, provide a 95% CI for the expected (true average) lifetime. [5]

4. A tube light producer company claims that 80% of the tube lights manufactured by it have life time more
than 2 years. The consumer forum thinks the percentage is less.

(i) Identify the population parameter being tested, the null and alternative hypotheses. [3]
(ii) For a sample of size 150, determine the probability of Type II error at 5% level of significance if the
consumer forum thinks that 70% tube lights have life time more than 2 years. [7]
