3.8.1 About the SMP SG-42xx platform Power Supply MOV Protection
The MOV protection offer and handling is different for the SMP SG-4250 and the SMP SG-4260 models.
MOV protection for SMP SG-42xx platforms equipped with the high voltage power supply option
The use of a MOV protection is required only if the SMP SG-42xx platform is equipped with the low voltage
power supply option, to meet the requirements of the IEC 61850-3 edition 1.0 and IEEE 1613-2009
standards.
However, with the MOV protection mechanism, the SMP SG-42xx platform power supply is not isolated.
If the SMP SG-42xx platform is equipped with the low voltage power supply option:
• The SMP SG-4250 unit can enable or not the MOV protection. The unit is shipped with a jumper strap
installed on pins 1 and 2 of its power supply terminal block, which enables a Metal-Oxide Varistor
(MOV) for additional overvoltage surge protection.
• The SMP SG-4260 unit is shipped with the MOV protection, disabling it is not possible.
Figure 12: MOV jumper installed on low voltage DC terminal block of the SMP SG-4250 unit
MOV protection for SMP SG-42xx platforms equipped with the high voltage power supply option
The SMP SG-42xx platform does not require the MOV protection to be compliant with IEC 61850-3 edition
1.0 and IEEE 1613-2009 standards.
If the SMP SG-42xx platform equipped with the high voltage power supply option:
• The SMP SG-4250 unit is not shipped with the jumper strap installed on pins 1 and 2 of its power
supply terminal block to enable a Metal-Oxide Varistor (MOV) for additional overvoltage surge
protection. The jumper is however included in the shipping box and can be installed at site
• The SMP SG-4260 unit is shipped with the MOV protection, disabling it is not possible.
To meet the requirements for level 4 surge immunity per IEC 61000-4-5 edition 2.0 (instead of level 3), the
MOV protection should be installed on an SMP SG-4250 unit equipped with the high voltage power supply
option.

The RS-485 standard allows a balanced transmission line to be shared in party-link multidrop mode. As
many as 32 transmitter/receiver pairs (“unit loads”) can share a multidrop network as long as 2000 feet

platform is connected to 'N' IEDs. In order to work properly, the transmission line is terminated at both
ends, but not at drop points in the middle of the line. Usually, termination resistors should be used with high
data rates and long transmission lines; however, some IEDs may show communication errors even with
low data rates or short transmission lines. Typical resistor value is 120 Ω; a resistor value that is lower than
90 Ω is not recommended.

Chapter 5: SMP Gateway Software and Tools Installation
SMP Manager This program manages all SMP Gateway units that are installed in your substation. It
displays the status of each unit, manages their configuration files, and is used to start
other SMP Tools so they connect automatically to selected units. It is also used to
update the software and license information of the SMP Gateway, and to specify user
authentication settings for this unit.
SMP Manager is also used to specify the network adapter settings of the SMP SG-42xx
platform.
SMP Config This program is used to configure the SMP Gateway software application, by specifying
settings for master and slave protocols, built-in firewall access rules, transparent
("passthrough") connection settings, etc. SMP Config stores this information in a
configuration file, which can be uploaded in the SMP Gateway unit using SMP Manager.
61850 Config As a complement to SMP Config, 61850 Config is used to specify IEC 61850- and UCA
2.0-specific settings, and to add these settings to an SMP Gateway configuration (.par)
file.
SMP Log This program allows users to browse through and manage log files that are generated
and maintained by an SMP Gateway unit.
SMP Stats The SMP Stats program allows users to browse through and manage a large variety of
real-time statistics and internal counters that are generated and dynamically updated by
an SMP Gateway unit.
SMP Trace This program allows users to browse through real-time traces that are generated by the
SMP Gateway. As opposed to log entries, traces are not stored in non-volatile memory,
but contain in-depth information about protocol exchanges and data acquisition.
SMP Connect The SMP Connect program is used to remotely access IEDs that are connected to an
SMP Gateway unit, through transparent (“passthrough”) connections, for the purpose of
doing remote configuration and maintenance of these IEDs using manufacturer-provided
software.
Event This application allows users to convert SMP Gateway master protocol event files to the
Translator COMTRADE format.
Note:
Eaton recommends the installation of the latest service packs for each of these operating systems.
SMP Tools can be installed on computers that meet the following minimum requirements:
• 1.4 GHz processor speed (recommended: 2.0 GHz or faster)
• 2 GB of RAM (recommended: 4 GB of RAM)
• At least 4 GB of disk space for a new installation
• At least 400 MB of disk space for each additional version pack
Browser requirements
The SMP Gateway HMI browser-based application, which provides the Single-Line Diagram Remote
Display and Communication Dashboard features, requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 11 (or later)
or Google Chrome.
5.2.1 Installing Internet Security Certificate Files on the SMP Tools Computer

programs depending on the unit condition (following a critical system failure, for example) or by
user selection (using the front panel pushbutton).
These programs are factory-installed.
Rescue The rescue operating system provides minimal services that allow the recovery of the
operating unit when problems occur at the main operating system level.
system
The rescue operating system is factory-installed.
Main operating The main operating system manages how the SMP Gateway application uses the
system hardware components of the SMP SG-42xx platform. It also provides a command-
line interface that allows power users to perform advanced maintenance features, and
which gives access to the file system of the SMP SG-42xx platform.
The main operating system can be updated using SMP Manager.
SMP Gateway The SMP Gateway application encompasses all the high-level features of the SMP
application SG-42xx platform:
• protocols and communications
• real-time data acquisition and storage
• event file retrieval
• remote access ("passthrough") to IEDs
• etc.
The SMP SG-42xx platform web server, which hosts SMP Gateway HMI features such
as the communication dashboard, single-line diagram display and a commissioning
tool, is also part of the SMP Gateway application.
The SMP Gateway application can be updated using SMP Manager.

Chapter 6: SMP SG-42xx platform Configuration
Instructions:
Select Windows > All Programs > Eaton SMP Tools > SMP Manager.
SMP Manager starts up and lists all SMP Gateway units it currently monitors.
Instructions:
1. Start SMP Manager.
2. Connect one end of the USB cable provided with the SMP SG-42xx platform to the computer that hosts
SMP Manager.
3. Connect the other end of the cable to the SMP SG-42xx platform.
Results:
SMP Manager automatically detects the SMP SG-42xx platform and adds it to the list; SMP Manager
names it USB and assigns it the IP address of its USB adapter.
Note:
The IP address of the USB adapter of each SMP SG-42xx platform is hard-coded to 172.31.0.1,
and cannot be changed. As a result, only one SMP SG-42xx platform can be configured through
USB at a time.
What to do next:
1. Configure the SMP SG-42xx platform network adapters through the USB connection.
2. Add the SMP SG-42xx platform to the list of SMP Gateways monitored in SMP Manager, using its
specific name and IP addresses.
3. Configure the SMP SG-42xx platform application using SMP Config.
IP Address
The IP address is a numerical label that is assigned to network adapters of devices that participate in a
computer network and that use the Internet Protocol (IP) for communications between them. It consists of
four numbers from 0 to 255, separated by periods, such as 125.90.234.12.
The SMP SG-42xx platform has two integrated network adapters, which means that it can be configured
with two IP addresses, allowing it to communicate over two different IP networks or subnets.
When equipped with Ethernet communication modules, the SMP SG-42xx platform can have up to 10
network adapters, each of these adapters having its own IP address.
Note:
The SMP SG-42xx platform is not an Ethernet switch: each Ethernet port is independent and must
be assigned to a different subnet.
Subnet Mask
A TCP/IP network is subdivided into subnets. All network devices within a particular subnet can
communicate with one another in one “hop”, using their respective IP addresses. The subnet mask is a bit
mask that defines the portion of the IP address that is common to all network devices that share the same
subnet.
For example, network devices using IP addresses 125.90.234.12 and 125.90.234.25 are on a subnet
designated by subnet mask 125.90.234.0.
Eaton • 59
Chapter 6: SMP SG-42xx platform Configuration
Default Gateway
When the SMP SG-42xx platform must communicate with a network device that is outside the subnets for
which it is configured, it must go through a network gateway that will route communications to the other
subnet. The IP address of this network gateway is the default gateway.
Typically, you only specify one default gateway for each network adapter of the SMP SG-42xx platform. It
is possible to specify additional default gateways for redundancy purposes: the SMP SG-42xx platform will
try using the next default gateway in the list only if the preceding one is failing.
DNS Server
A DNS (Domain Name System) server allows the use of symbolic names rather than IP addresses for
network devices. For example, a protocol might refer to a substation device as relay6.mycompany.com,
instead of using its 10.106.121.34 IP address. When a symbolic name is used, the DNS server translates
the name to an IP address.
WINS Server
A WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) server also allows the use of symbolic names instead of IP
addresses. At startup, the SMP SG-42xx platform informs the WINS server of its symbolic name and IP
address.
The WINS name of an SMP SG-42xx platform cannot be changed, and uses the following syntax:
SMP<serial>
where <serial> is the SMP SG-42xx platform serial number.
Note:
For example, SMP7000003 is the WINS name of the SMP SG-42xx platform with serial number
7000003.
NIC Teaming
NIC stands for Network Interface Card (also called "Network Adapters"). As the SMP SG-42xx platform is
equipped with at least two NICs, these cards can be grouped for network fault tolerance: if the NIC or any
other component of the corresponding network fails, the network connection does not cease and continues
to operate on the other NIC. Note that only consecutive NICs can be teamed together.
Multihoming
The SMP SG-42xx platform supports single-link multihoming, which allows it to connect to multiple
Ethernet networks using the same adapter (and multiple IP addresses).
VLAN Tagging
The SMP SG-42xx platform can communicate over Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs); for that matter, a
VLAN identifier can be assigned to each additional IP address specified for any of its network adapters.
Instructions:
1. Start SMP Manager.
2. In SMP Manager, select the SMP SG-42xx platform to configure.
3. Select Gateway > Configure Network Settings.
b) To disable the network adapter, leave the IP address text box empty.
Eaton • 61
Chapter 6: SMP SG-42xx platform Configuration
c) To configure the network adapter, type the IP address, the Subnet mask, and the Default gateway
in the corresponding text boxes.
Restriction:
The first IP address cannot be used over a VLAN: this way, the SMP SG-42xx platform
will remain reachable even if a major failure occurs at the firmware level. You must specify
additional IP addresses to use the SMP SG-42xx platform over VLANs.
d) If necessary, type the IP addresses of the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server in the
corresponding text boxes.
e) Click OK.

6.6 Adding the SMP SG-42xx platform to the List of SMP Gateways
Monitored in SMP Manager
Instructions:
1. In SMP Manager, select File > Add SMP Gateway.
b) If you also want SMP Manager to reach the SMP SG-42xx platform via another network, type
another IP address of the SMP SG-42xx platform in the Second IP Address box.
c) If the SMP SG-42xx platform cannot be accessed through the network, but through a dialup
connection, clear the Automatically Poll SMP Status at startup check box to prevent SMP
Manager from polling the gateway for its status; this will avoid monopolizing a costly telephone
connection.
4. Under Configuration Tools Version, select which version of SMP Config and 61850 Config will be
used to modify the configuration file of this SMP SG-42xx platform:
a) To always use the same version as the software components installed on the SMP SG-42xx
platform, select Use same version as SMP Gateway.
b) Otherwise, select Use specific version and select a version from the corresponding combo box.
5. Click Add.
The SMP SG-42xx platform is added to the list. If the network settings are properly specified, you
should see the current status of the SMP SG-42xx platform under the Status column.
6. If the status is not available, make sure the IP addresses specified in the SMP Gateway Properties
window match the network adapter settings of the SMP SG-42xx platform. Adjust either group of
settings accordingly, if necessary.
7. When the network settings are properly configured and the unit status is available in SMP Manager,
unplug the USB cable from the SMP SG-42xx platform.
Instructions:

6.7.2 Specifying the Minimal Time Quality Requirement Setting of an SMP SG-42xx
platform
The Minimal Time Quality Requirement setting specifies the requirement that the SMP SG-42xx platform
system clock must evaluate in order to determine its synchronization status.
Instructions:
1. Start SMP Config.
2. In SMP Config, expand the System branch, then the Time branch, and then select the
Synchronization Status branch.
3. In the Minimal Time Quality Requirement cell, select the criterion that corresponds to the expected
accuracy of the SMP SG-42xx platform system clock.
4. Select File > Save.
What to do next:
If you are done with the configuration process, upload the configuration file on the SMP SG-42xx platform
and restart it to apply the configuration changes.
Instructions:
1. Start SMP Config.
2. In SMP Config, expand the System branch, then the Time branch, and then select the IRIG‑B
Synchronization branch.
3. IRIG-B synchronization is enabled by default. It is however possible to disable the IRIG-B input and
consequently, the synchronization. To do that, remove the checkmark in the Enabled box to disable it.
4. The Format cell allows to select which timestamping information components are expected when
synchronizing with IRIG-B. Any timestamping information component available at the IRIG-B input
but not specified in the selected Format cell, through the time code designation, is ignored. The Auto
Detect setting is set by default; with this format setting, all timestamping information components
available at the IRIG-B input are extracted, except for the Year timestamping information component,
which can be extracted only if the IEEE 1344 format signal is detected. The Year component is thus
ignored if an other format is detected. Select which timestamping information components are required
for the IRIG-B synchronization by selecting the right format.
For example, if the signal format BCD Time of the Year (Time code designation: B002) is selected in
the Format cell, the only information that will be retrieved from the IRIG-B signal will be: Day of the year
and Second of the day, even if the signal provides more timestamping information components.
5. In the Time Zone cell, select the time zone specific to the time information provided by the IRIG-B
source.
6. If the IRIG-B source is automatically adjusted for daylight savings, select Auto Adjust DST.
7. Select File > Save.

platform is on standby.
4. Unless you selected When started, forward input signal or At system boot, forward input signal for
the Distribution Conditions setting, you must specify additional settings about the IRIG-B signal that
will be distributed by the SMP SG-42xx platform:
a) In the Format cell, select the IRIG-B format to which the SMP SG-42xx platform system clock
information should be encoded in the output signal.
b) Specify the Output Signal Voltage in the corresponding cell.
c) If the IRIG-B signal must be distributed in the UTC format, select the GMT time zone in the Time
Zone cell.
d) Otherwise, select the time zone to use for the IRIG-B output signal (essentially, it should be the
time zone of the area where your substation is located); if required, select Auto Adjust DST to
automatically adjust the IRIG-B output signal for daylight savings.
5. Select File > Save.

This chapter presents the SMP SG-42xx platform redundancy feature,
describes how to group two SMP SG-42xx platforms for redundancy
purposes, and explains how to monitor the current status of an SMP
SG-42xx platform redundancy group through various means.

Chapter 7: SMP SG-42xx platform Redundancy
Figure 30: Typical failover scenario in a basic SMP SG-42xx platform redundancy configuration
The primary failover condition is the detection of a hardware failure on the active SMP SG-42xx platform.
Other failover conditions based on SMP SG-42xx platform hardware characteristics (such as a low
memory condition) can be defined while grouping the SMP SG-42xx platform for redundancy. Additional
failover conditions based on the current state of binary input points can also be specified through a text
file. For additional information on that point, refer to section: Additional Failover Conditions using the
SysServerConfig.txt file on page 84.

Chapter 7: SMP SG-42xx platform Redundancy
Figure 32: Failure recovery scenario with an SMP SG-42xx platform designated as the preferred one
1. The active SMP SG-42xx platform retrieves data from the IED.
2. Retrieved data is transmitted to the standby SMP SG-42xx platform before it can be reported to the
control center; this ensures that no invalid data is reported when a failover occurs.
3. Data is then reported by the active SMP SG-42xx platform or the standby SMP SG-42xx platform (or
both) to the corresponding control center.
Note:
The group IP address is always associated with the active SMP SG-42xx platform. When the
control center wants to connect to the standby SMP SG-42xx platform, it must use its physical IP
address.
Figure 33: Hot-standby redundancy data flow
Restrictions
• Hot-standby redundancy is not supported by all master and slave protocols. Refer to the documentation
of the specific protocol to see if it is supported.
• If you use the Automation Functions components to perform some operations on the real-time data,
note that only the Logical function and Logic Processor expressions work while the SMP SG-42xx
platform is on standby.
• Slave protocol instances that use serial communication links cannot be configured for hot-standby
redundancy, as the serial ports of the standby SMP SG-42xx platform are put into high impedance
mode.

Chapter 7: SMP SG-42xx platform Redundancy
a) Under Group network configuration, specify the IP address and subnet mask for each adapter
that will be shared by both SMP SG-42xx platform. You can specify up to eight IP addresses per
adapter. You can also specify a VLAN number (from 0 to 4094, with 0 meaning no VLAN).
Note:
The group IP address must be different than the physiscal IP addresses specified for each
SMP SG-42xx platform . It identifies the group and is to be used by the control center to
communicate with the active SMP SG-42xx platform . If the active SMP SG-42xx platform
fails, the group IP address and subnet mask are assigned to the standby SMP SG-42xx
platform .
6. Select the Failover - Gateway Conditions tab:
a) Under General failover conditions, if you want the active SMP SG-42xx platform to fail over when
its internal temperature is too high, select the High-temperature alarm is activated condition.
b) Still under General failover conditions, if you want the active SMP SG-42xx platform to fail over
when its available memory reaches a given threshold, select the The available memory is lower
than condition; specify the threshold value (in percentage) in the corresponding box.
c) Under Additional failover conditions, you can enable additional failover conditions based on the
state of binary input data points by selecting Activate additional failover conditions The list of
binary input data points must be specified in a text file named SysServerConfig.txt. Refer to the
section 7.3.4 for details.
7. Select the Failover - Network Conditions tab:
a) Under Connection loss, if you want the active SMP SG-42xx platform to fail over when it is unable
to detect the presence of a network through its Ethernet connectors, select either Fails over when
at least one of the selected adapters is disconnected or Fails over when all the selected
adapters are disconnected. Then, select the adapters in the corresponding box below.
b) Under Connection failure, you can further detect network failures by pinging the IP addresses of
different network devices instead of solely detecting network activity. For example, you can ping the
following devices: the network router, the SCADA, the control center or the master station. To do so,
select either Fails over when at least one of the listed network devices is unavailable or Fails
over when all the listed network devices are unavailable. Then, enter up to ten IP addresses to
ping, in the corresponding box below.
8. Click OK.
SMP Manager sends the redundancy settings to both SMP SG-42xx platforms.
9. Restart both SMP SG-42xx platforms to activate the redundancy settings.
Results:
Both SMP SG-42xx platforms will restart, one entering the active state while the other waits on standby (or
hot standby).
What to do next:
If you specified that one of the redundancy communication link is a serial link, establish that physical
connection as soon as possible to prevent unnecessary failover operations.

7.3.3 Establishing a Serial Redundancy Link Between Two SMP SG-42xx platforms
This procedure explains how to physically establish a serial communication link between two SMP
SG-42xx platforms of a redundancy group.
Instructions:
1. Connect one end of the cable to the COM1 serial port located on the back panel of the first SMP
SG-42xx platform.
2. Connect the other end of the cable to the COM1 serial port of the second SMP SG-42xx platform.
Note:
The space and the comma characters are used as separators in the file. If you must use any of
those characters as part of the point name or description, you must prefix this character with the
backslash character (\).
For example, to use a binary input point named "IED_,TEST_Input01", type:

Chapter 7: SMP SG-42xx platform Redundancy
Color Meaning
Status Description
Active Indicates that this SMP SG-42xx platform is active, which means that it
communicates with field devices and sends keep-alive messages at a
frequency specified at configuration time.
If a failover occurs, it will become the standby SMP SG-42xx platform.
Standby The Standby status is transitional; it indicates that this SMP SG-42xx
platform is configured to be the standby unit and is trying to reach the Hot
Standby or Partial Hot Standby statuses (if a problem occurs).
Hot Standby Indicates that this SMP SG-42xx platform is on hot standby.
It listens for “keep alive” messages from the active SMP Gateway.
Moreover, the SMP SG-42xx platform on standby will display the
Hot Standby status when the redundancy group has reached the
full synchronization status, which is defined according to the default
redundancy functionalities as well as to the hot standby configuration
requirements set in SMP Config for the master protocols, the slave
protocols and other system components.
Partial Hot Standby Indicates that this SMP SG-42xx platform is on hot standby, but that the
two SMP SG-42xx platforms of the group have different configuration
files or that there are some real-time data synchronization issues.
The Redundancy logs may be helpful in searching the cause of the
synchronization problem.
Peer IP: nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn Indicates that one SMP SG-42xx platform of the group is not present in
the SMP Gateway list of SMP Manager.
To fix the problem, add the second SMP SG-42xx platform to the list.
Too Many SMPs There are more than two SMP SG-42xx platforms in this redundancy
group.
To fix the problem, remove the superfluous SMP SG-42xx platform from
the group.
Different parameters The two SMP SG-42xx platforms of this redundancy group do not have
the same redundancy settings.
Status Description
Peer IP: nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn => The other SMP SG-42xx platform of this redundancy group can be found
Not in redundancy. in the SMP Gateway list of SMP Manager; however, it does not appear to
be really part of the redundancy group.

2. In SMP Manager, select all SMP Gateways for which you want to create a report file; if you select more
than one SMP Gateways, one report file will be created for each gateway.
3. Select Gateway > Make Report.
Note:
The Make Report command will only be available if the selected SMP Gateways are online.
4. If you want to display the information that will be collected from the SMP Gateways and included in the
report, click Tell me more.
5. Type additional information in the text box, such as a problem description or the reason why you are
requesting technical assistance, if this report is intended to the Eaton Technical Support group.
6. The name of each report file includes the name of the SMP Gateway, its serial number, and the current
date and time; to add a text prefix to this name, type it in the Optional label box.
7. If you want SMP Manager to show the location of the report file in a Windows Explorer window at the
end of the generation process, select Extract Automatically.
8. Click Save.
9. In the Browse for Folder window, select the folder where you want to save the report files.
10.Click OK to start the report generation.
SMP Gateway Report progress windows appear (one for each report/gateway), showing the progress

2. If you have trouble finding the problem, try using a simplified version of your SMP SG-42xx platform
configuration file in an attempt to isolate the problem. For example, start with only one protocol instance
and the corresponding connection.
3. If the problem persists, contact the Eaton technical assistance group.
SMP Trace and SMP Stats are the ideal tools to help you troubleshooting communication problems and
determining in which layer the problem occurred. SMP Trace shows you the information that was sent back
and forth between the SMP SG-42xx platform and the device, while SMP Stats supplies you with statistics
that can help you detect an anomaly.
For example, statistics may show you that there were no exchanges whatsoever on a particular
connection, while protocol traces may show you that the SMP SG-42xx platform never got responses when
it polled a particular device.
Do I need an adapter?
Some IEDs require a null modem adapter for RS-232 communications with the SMP SG-42xx platform.

Note:
Some devices are not able to respond to rapid scan requests because they process the
information very slowly. Other devices only allow slow communications links - 9600 baud
or less. If the SMP SG-42xx platform scans such devices too quickly, the request will arrive
before the last block of data is read, thereby causing communications problems.
Refer to the reference manual of the corresponding protocol component for additional information about
these settings and protocol-specific troubleshooting instructions.
Instructions:
1. In SMP Manager, select the SMP SG-42xx platform to reset.
2. Select Update > Restore Factory Settings.
3. In the confirmation window, click Yes.
4. If authentication is active on the SMP SG-42xx platform, enter valid account credentials to perform the
factory reset operation.
5. If authentication is active on the SMP SG-42xx platform and you do not remember the administrator
account password, Eaton’s technical assistance team can provide you with an unlock code that will
allow you to perform a factory reset of the SMP SG-42xx platform. Proceed as follows:
a) In the window that informs you about the invalid password, click Lost Password.
b) Note down the 10-byte authentication code that is displayed by SMP Manager.
Here is an example of authentication code:
255-138-225-225-153-132-236-169-132-224
c) Contact Eaton technical assistance team; explain your situation and provide them with the
authentication code. In return, the Eaton representatives will provide you with the unlock code, which
is only valid for a limited time.
d) Type the unlock code in the corresponding box, and then click OK.
Results:
Factory settings will be restored on the SMP SG-42xx platform. This operation can take a few minutes,
before the SMP SG-42xx platform restarts and becomes fully available again.
