“Intoy the Merman of Mariners’ Street” by Eros Atalia.

21st LIT and Perdev Pt.2

Intoy the Merman in the Mariners by Eros Atalia, tells a story about some of the life of the people in the mariners’
street and mostly about intoy, The best diver and the most trusted worker in the street especially when it comes to
mussels. He lives with his childhood friend “Bertong Baka”, as a Bus cleaner and he likes his childhood friend
“Doray” she works as a prostitute in the dock at night. He builds a small farm of mussels in hoping that the source
of its income is for Doray and her two siblings and to make her stop attending at the dock and selling herself at
night.

Based on the text, The author style of writing this kind of text was explicit, Therefore since there are not many
sugar-coated words and it easy to understand but as I read it I slightly got fed up being awkward reading it
because some of the timelines of the story was kind of confusing, The story keeps shifting from the past, and the
present time. The narration was not that bad yet it's breath-taking or astonishing as I keep reading it and as for me
it’s a masterpiece on how the author created this kind of storyline because it kind of relates to present society.

Some text of the story that I noticed some figure of speech in this scenario that was used by the author of the
story “Simile”, First of all, I noticed some comparison between elements of character here and it is about Intoy and
a merman about comparison of this example sentence “because he is like the fabled underwater creature”, The
second is “Personification”, As used in something that is given to a human attribute, For an example of the text is
“As though to say “the mussels have been sentenced. “Mang Amor shakes his head”. And for the last one is the
“Synecdoche”, It is said that this figure of speech is used at a time when a part of a whole is being represented,
Here’s the example of the text for this figure speech, “You’re older than me by a couple of months!”

As for the Climax of the story is that all I can say is it about Intoy and Doray’s confrontation at the dock that Doray
offered to come by at his place plus not in the dock, Intoy seems confused to Doray action thinking that if she
feels something to him as he feels to her or she wants to give her “tilapia” to him.

As for me, this kind of story makes me feel uncomfortable at first because I got bored reading it, But as I continue
to read it in the middle I noticed some of the stories that this kinda relate to real life because it feels like a real
story to me as I soon realize the real meaning of the story as I keep reading it.

Some of the characters in the story had different conflicts in their lives and become a challenge for their
adolescent life. Some characters faced a lot of challenges in their lives that made them who they are today, and
some of them able to solve their problem in such a worst way. Yeyeng Tikol has the opportunity to study, he's
excellence, smart but got depressed and didn’t continue studying because of his Father that died causing him to
demotivated in such way, Things got even went loss to him instead to keep going. For intoy he was able to
resolve it making them better as an individual, He didn’t know how to swim when he still a child, and Betong Baka
with some of their friends teased him for who he is today. But rather than being sulk to it, he used it to motivate
him to learn how to swim which resulted in him being the best diver in the Mariners’ Street.

Some characters mostly got abandoned by their parent, and are currently making a living at such a young age for
them to make living and survive. I believe that they didn’t know how to be love and getting care by their loved one,
they didn’t even feel some care when they still a child even as an adolescent making them survive to the fittest.
Their parents were not able to nurture them costing them their attitude and their personalities of them as they
grow up, And lastly, even the environment that they still currently live is not good for their life it might influence

them to become an adult-like them, and to interact with much more older people they experience some terror on
their daily life as their youth feels to them that it’s being taken away as who they are now today.

This story is quietly somehow related to poverty mostly because of Doray’s case she didn’t have a choice to make
living but to sell herself to some fishermen for her two siblings to support them causing her to sacrifice herself for
the good of her two siblings making her the parents of them because it’s difficult for her to look for a decent job
plus the only way she thinks was to sell herself, As same with Boyet situation, although being a thief was already
his role to make some living too but in such a bad way and got even worst as he continues to grow up, This just
shows us that sometimes the most unfortunates have no choice but to keep proceeding in life just to do this kind
of things for them to keep living and for their family to live.

This would tackle us as one of the relevant issues for the world today about some early age to work for them to
live because of for their parents are gone that they know and instead of enjoying or studying in their youth. They
didn’t even have a chance to do it because they can’t provide themselves and for their family that is why it made
me realize that we are lucky to have this kind of life instead of working we just hope that our parents provided us
our needs and love that is why we need to be satisfied for who we are today because some people didn’t even
feel parents love because of family problem to experience as such unconditional of this things, We should be
thankful that even were still in a process of adolescent age we didn’t experience to provide our family needs that
is why if we ever become successful for just a little kindness to this people would become a big thankfulness for
them that is why we need to keep striving into our life same us those people in needs.
