ECE204—AC Circuits

Review for Test 1

1. A 0.5F capacitor has an initial voltage of 1 V and draws the current shown below.
Sketch the capacitor voltage as a function of time (vc(t)) and determine the stored
energy at t = 20 sec.

2. In the following circuit i(t)=6t mA, compute an expression for v(t) that’s valid for t
≥0. Note, the initial condition can be determined when the switch is closed (for
t≤0 v(t) = 0V). Also compute the energy delivered by the current source at t=1ms.

4. A trace from an oscilloscope is shown below. The voltage channel was set on 10 V/div,
while the current channel was set on 5 A/div. Note that there are 20 divisions on the ”y” axis
and 2 divisions on the ”t” axis. The time-base was set at 10 msec/div.

Find the following quantities:

a) The frequency
b) The RMS values of the voltage and current
c) The voltage and current phasors reported in polar form
d) The equivalent impedance measured reported in rectangular form. Is this a capacitive or
inductive load?

5. Apply nodal analysis to the following circuit and determine the phasor voltages V1
V2 and V3. Confirm your result using mesh analysis.

6. Determine the Thevenin & Norton Equivalents at terminals a—b. Where the
sources are given by:
vs(t) = √2 x 500 cos(2000t + 900) V and is(t) = √2 x 5 cos(2000t - 900) A.
7. In the following circuit, assume that all sources act with the same frequency. The
current source Is has a peak-to-peak value of 6A and 0 phase offset, the period is 12.57
msec. Find the node-voltage values.

8. Solve the following set of equations to find the mesh currents. Report your answer in polar
phasor form with 3 significant digits and 1/10th of a degree precision.
50∙(I2-I1) - 5045◦ +I2∙j50+I2∙30 - j50∙(I2-I3)=0

(I3-I1) 40+(I3-I2)∙(-j50)+I3∙j75=0

9. The op amp in the circuit below is ideal. Find the steady-state expression of vo(t) and
sketch the waveform that would result when vg = 2cos106t V.

10. In the following circuit, find the value of RMS value of IL(t) if the 5V DC source is
replaced with an AC source with peak value 5V, frequency 1kHz, and a phase offset of
45 degrees. The 3V DC source is replaced with an AC source with peak value 3V,
frequency 1kHz, and a phase offset of -10 degrees.
