A STEP TOWARDS CHANGE.

SYNOPSIS

The intention of creating a website for R.T. circle, Bengaluru was to bring out

a practical solution and give forth a single design to serve multifaceted functions in

resolving the issues which have been pestering the activities of the testing facility.

The purpose of the website is not limited to R.T. circle, Bengaluru usage alone but

serves as a benchmark to the clients of the testing facility namely like Transmission

lines & substations, major works staff by encouraging the clients engaged to carry

out the best modes of operations and provide qualitative functioning of the

protection equipment’s. It’s aimed to communicate key information of the activities

performed by our testing personnel and availability of the same data at ease at

backend without need to make enquires repeatedly and to make the data

availability transparent.

Website prominently focuses towards educating R.T Engineers new entrants

and existing engineers to sharpen their axes and make them self-sustainable in this

competitive environment and become resourceful by providing them with the

proper resources that can enable them to work better.

Limiting website to R.T. circle, Bengaluru at present is only to ensure proper

working / functioning of the same and this can be extended later to the KPTCL as

whole, circle-wise after successful results are achieved for a period of six months.

1.1. INTRODUCTION:
In the present scenario, where the world is moving from traditionalisation to
modernization, computerization and globalization there is an intense competition. The
situations are becoming more complex and the modern day employees are experiencing
distress. To meet the challenges posed by present standards, ever evolving technologies
and theories retracting from the conventionally accepted dogma, organizations must focus
their attention in bringing a balance between knowledge and work. At the same time
creation, evolution, acceptance and implementation of such knowledge and communication
of such knowledge in its purest form to all the officers and employees is evident. Hence
making data available at their disposal at ease and also making the approaches of office
procedures in routine day to day works can bring dramatic changes in the behaviour and
will be helpful in the overall development of the employee and organization as a whole.
Hence a bold step towards change has been taken by me to create an indigenous website
for R.T circle, Bangalore.

As we know, website is a collection of Web pages, images, videos and other


digital assets that is hosted on one or several Web server, usually accessible via the
Internet, cell phone or a LAN. The pages of websites can usually be accessed from a
common root URL called the homepage, and usually reside on the same physical server.
The URLs of the pages organize them into a hierarchy, although the hyperlinks between
them control how the reader perceives the overall structure and how the traffic flows
between the different parts of the sites. A website requires attractive design and proper
arrangement of links and images, which enables a browser to easily interpret and access
the properties of the site. Hence it provides the browser with adequate information and
functionality about the organization, community, network etc.

In current working environment, any new freshman entering R.T although


having a strong technical background fails or take ages in being an established R.T
Engineer skilled in the art of protective relaying, transformers, circuit breakers and other
equipment’s due to the non-availability of a structured system of approach/good mentor.

The freshman looks for resources available at their reach and sometimes
follow bad practices towards their everyday works. Today an employee desires work to be
more meaningful and challenging and be satisfactory because quality is the key to good
work and Good work gives an opportunity for deep sense of fulfillment. Employees seek a
supportive work environment that will enable them sustain the dynamically changing
environmental conditions. To formulate such balance taking some ample measure is quite
imperative.

A Qualitative and superior Work environment indicates that the work does
not have excessively negative conditions. It doesn’t put employees to undue stress. It
should not damage or degrade their humanness. It should not be threatening or unduly
dangerous. Employees with good environment experience better health and greater safety
on the job, control of the work, development of managerial ability, reduction in negative
remarks, security, improved communication in the organization and greater understanding
and respect between officers and workers.

The design of website has been applied towards a wide variety of


organizational improvement efforts. Aspects of the change mechanism usually promotes
harmony, problem solving and resolves unrest.

The purpose of the website is to provide R.T engineers and clients associated with
R.T to have a friendly set of web pages that are easy to navigate and at the same time
provide sufficient depth and information regarding the activity performed in their
respective stations and also hold such data as a databank online through webspace.

Two potential groups of viewers exist:

a) R.T Engineers who are working in R.T. circle, Bengaluru.


b) Engineers working in major works divisions and T.L & SS divisions who are our
actual clients where the former one is engaged in construction of substations and
the latter engaged in maintenance of lines and sub-stations under jurisdiction of R.T.
circle, Bengaluru

The website will provide authenticated service to in-house engineers and clients
working with us by providing a safe environment for online users. The website has a multi-
dimensional approach and when used correctly can be used as the most effective tool of the
cutting edge technology.

Features & benefits of the site includes:

 Resource sharing to R.T users by rendering them with the technical manuals,
standards, study materials, procedures and guide lines, drawings, limiting values of
test results.
 A unique Forum for R.T engineers to connect them through a webspace. .
 Division wise preparation, updating and uploading of test reports and letters at ease
and availability of the same to TL&SS staff.
 Timely updation of available information from TL&SS end regarding equipment’s
released from sub-stations in order to display the information online through SMS
thus enabling the potential TL&SS divisions to make use of released equipment
information elsewhere and thus
 Make economical usage of the released equipment’s.
 Avoiding unnecessary purchases.
 Avoid unwanted depletion of released good equipment’s into scraps due to
their non-usage of a period of time.
 Dumping & physical movement of released equipment’s to store and then to
substation.
 Digitizing the operation of attending trouble in substations by providing a complaint
portal so that clients can log the complaint and the same shall be rerouted to
concerned divisional R.T heads through SMS and thus attending the problem at ease.
The SMS package for the client portal per SMS comes as an extra cost.
 Educating the R.T engineers about safety and also development of new safety
procedures in creating a fool proof system.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

 The current mode of communication of the testing giant with its clients and personnel
spread over a large geographical area and separated by geographical borders is too
conventional/traditional and the communication of the instructions, reports,
complaints, circulars is through postal services which involves much downtime between
transitions and majorly some letters never reach the destined locations and intended
persons which is creating distress due to the non-availability of the communicated
information and downtime in the scheduled/ designated works, long delays during
shipments, excessive use of paper, high postage charges every year.

 Knowledge has a beginning but no end. Knowledge serves as the key to the overall
development & progress of a healthy organization. In R.T, the possession of good
knowledge serves well on field in examining, testing and review of the test equipment’s
and R.T engineers have always pioneered and exceled this area of specialization and
served well to the organizational objectives but due to global competition,
organizational changes like retirement, transfer, promotion of eminent engineers has
given rise to a deficiency in the knowledge base which has led a “Start from Scratch”
scenario to every new engineer joining the Testing circle.

 Safety and training are the key areas of any organization and even the Relay testing
circle is not an exception to it. Hence there is a potential need to train the staff working
in the testing utility to its fullest possible extent to create awareness of safety and
designing of a Fool proof system to mitigate accidents. Training is a continuous process
of learning and serves in the betterment of attaining organizational objectives.

In the ever-blooming competitory world, the function of Engineers has


moved from technical to techno-administrative, techno-administrative to techno-executive-
strategic. The role of R.T Engineers today is strategic. R.T attracts many numbers of
employees but retaining them is very difficult. We are living in a learned society. Good
products and knowledge based products are too many and competition is on the rise, hence
loosing skillful workers who are highly competitive, competent, knowledgeable, skillful and

talented through promotion, transfer or retirement is a loss to the testing giant as the
expertise and knowledge goes with the persons. So to address this problem a virtual
person is created in the form of website to store, share the works of all great engineering
patrons.

If the organization would like to be really be successful and competitive it has to


primarily focus on creation of a knowledge base and employees placed at the right place by
determining their expertise will yield long term benefits and help in attaining the
organizational objective. Providing a good exposure to such knowledge base will always
harness the employee’s will, Strength’s and thus enabling the employees in the
organization to attain better productivity and involvement in rediscovering Organizational
goals.
